The NCAA has reportedly sent a notice of allegations to UConn in connection to alleged unethical conduct of the Level I degree by former MBB HC Ollie. Specifically, Ollie is said to have purposely misled association investigators. Impermissible contact with a prospective student-athlete, impermissible meals & failure to monitor are also in the mix. The school is not mentioned as a culprit. Ollie's attorney, "...an allegation is not proof of anything, it's just an allegation. When the time comes to prove what actually happened, we will show that Coach Ollie did nothing to justify UConn's failure to pay him the money that is due him by contract." More. (link)
Lafayette AD Freeman rolls out her new five-year strategic vision for the Leopards that comes with the header of, "Climb the Hill: Creating a Championship Culture." The plan is built around six pillars: achieving competitive excellence, strengthening academic excellence, providing the most positive student-athlete experience possible, building more community and spirit, ensuring integrity in everything associated with Lafayette athletics and securing the funding necessary for success. Each pillar is individually backed by a coupe of "objectives" that are planned for execution with supporting "strategies." Champion's mindset: "An everyday approach to your role with a positive attitude and an intrinsic motivation that leads to continual improvement in your contribution to the program’s level of success." More. (link - release, link - full plan)
Washington State Prez Schulz inks on his goals for the current academic year & they include note for athletics. As Schulz & company have previously voiced, one item is to balance the budget within the next five fiscal years. There's also a push to get naming rights deals done for Martin Stadium, the FB Operations Building & the Soccer Complex, as well as, "Employ an external expert in higher education leadership development to assist in enhancing the cohesiveness and performance of the senior leadership team." (link)
Missouri lands $10M big ones as the Walsworth Family puts their name on Memorial Stadium's Columns Club. The funds will go toward the south end zone project at Faurot Field & future facilities work. Tigers AD Sterk notes it's the third "transformational" gift the Walsworths have donated. The family's namesake printing company is the 26th largest in the nation. (link)
Industry leader Sutton's Teall Capital raised $68M for its now-closed fund that includes initial investment commitments into the likes of Tailgate Guys & Dyehard Fan Supply. Sutton: "We are delighted with the success of our first raise both in terms of exceeding of our financial objective, goal as well as the quality of our investors. Our partners are recognized as leaders across multiple industries and bring incredible expertise and strategic insight to the companies we are building." Teall Partner Day: "The capital raised thus far will allow us to make acquisitions and continue to provide strong support for those companies already partially- or fully-acquired." Also, it looks like Tailgate Guys is up to 45 partners. (link)
Louisville: MBB ticket sales have already hit $11.9M & Cards leaders expect to at least match last year's total of $13.1M. For further comparison, 2016-17's haul was $13.7M. UofL AD Tyra does say donation revenue has decreased, though he doesn't mention by exactly how much. Tyra: "It'll be interesting to see when it's all said and done where we end up on season tickets. Some of that is attributable to what went on in the tax change, and the natural trend in attendance is always going to be a challenge." (link); Cards hoops pulled off a new season intro by setting up a half court at entertainment spot 4th Street Live. In the linked photo gallery, check out how the perimeter of the court was branded. Pretty interesting look. (link - article, link - photo gallery); Author Sokolove goes deep for The Chronicle of Higher Education in a piece titled, "A University Comes Undone." It's another long takeaway from Sokolove's recent book with former UofL MBB HC Pitino. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
I don't recall ever reading this story of how the Mountain West came to be as presidents from Colorado State, Utah, Wyoming & BYU, as well as Air Force's Superintendent met at the Denver airport to work through breaking away from the WAC. Former Wyoming Prez & current Charlotte Chancellor Dubois points to the WAC moving to divisions as one of the fracturing points, "Many of us were really quite upset at the decision that the athletic directors had made about the formation of these two divisions without any input from us, the presidents. I’m finding out I’m not going to be playing Air Force or CSU? Those were the two biggest gates for us." More Dubois: "We all felt it had to be done in a clandestine way. There was concern if political entities got involved, like the California General Assembly, that we wouldn’t be able to do it. We really did want a coup d’etat… We ended up calling Steve Weber at San Diego State and Carol Harter at UNLV and Bill (Gordon) at New Mexico and inviting them in. It was kind of, 'We need to hear from you by the end of the week or see you.'" Interestingly, former Colorado State sports information director Ozzello says he, nor then-Rams AD Weiser had any idea until they were called to former CSU Prez Yates' office & told the department was headed to the newly formed conference. MWC Commish Thompson indicates the early operations were like drinking out of a fire hose. Lots more. (link)

The current equation for Portland State's share of the university's student fee: (FALL ENROLLMENT) X $140 *75% WEIGHT + (PREVIOUS YEAR SFC ALLOCATION) * 25% WEIGHT + $19 (PRICE PER TICKET AVERAGE)  X STUDENT ATTENDANCE AT ATHLETIC EVENTS #. In FY19 the total is $3.6M for the Vikings. However, the Student Fee Committee is considering adding a GPA-based metric to the mix, though there's no agreement yet on how much weight it may have. (link)
New York Times scribe Tracy goes in on the addition of beer to so many college FB stadiums around the nation as a way to "fill seats, not couches." Former AECOM Director Golembiewski believes the play is far more about the long-term stemming of attendance slips than about immediate revenue opportunities. Golembiewski also notes the offering also attacks a cohort of fans that are more social & likely were not going to games previously. Florida Executive Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs Veatch on the new beer garden just to the north of The Swamp, "We think it will help that whole pregame experience." A bit more. (link)
USA Today's Schroeder goes deep on why so few 'Power 5' FB programs run the triple option like Army West Point used to scare the pants off of Oklahoma last weekend. Navy boss Niumatalolo: "There's a stigma, I guess. [...] Guys are concerned about the optics of it, but the biggest optic (should be) they want to win. … I think you would sell tickets by winning." Iowa State AD Pollard, while not looking for a HC himself, says style of play is a key consideration in the hiring process. Pollard: "It’s certainly an outlier option – no pun intended. But the spread was an outlier at one time, wasn’t it? Mike Leach was an outlier. We all thought he was crazy and then everybody started to adopt it. … I could see at the right institution at the right time and if you had the right individual." (link)
Stadium's Goodman continues his MBB 'Chain of Command' series with the AAC. Factors voted on by league coaches: history/tradition, media exposure, game atmosphere, budget/resources, buy games, recruiting base, facilities, selling pros & admission requirements. Results: UConn at #1, followed by Memphis, Cincinnati, Wichita State & Houston to round out the Top 5. Tulane voted as the toughest place to get it done in the conference. (link)
IDEO portfolio director Henkel and Wharton School professor and author Grant co-author for the HBR: "To Get Employees to Empathize With Customers, Make Them Think Like Customers." Step 1) Gather insights; 2) Get outside; 3) Get creative; and, 4) Invite a group of people to go through the exercise and talk about it. "It’s often said that necessity is the mother of invention. Sometimes we generate ideas to address our own needs. But in many cases, it’s the necessity of others that drives us to innovate. Empathy isn’t optional in problem-solving. It can drive creative breakthroughs." (link)

Watch: Fairfield AD Schlickmann with his September version of 'From the Director's Chair.' Notable is Schlickmann's discussion of Whole Foods serving as an official sponsor & being the Stags' partner on fueling stations. There's also coverage of competitive performances of far this school year & Fairfield Night at Yankee Stadium. (link)
The New York Post's Braziller is the latest to reflect on the MBB-FBI developments right at a year ago & posits there really hasn't been much of an impact on those involved. Brazillier gets comments on the record from an unidentified "high major" coach, "No one cares and there’s no penalties." Also, from an unidentified staffer at a program directly connected to the situation, "The only thing that’s changed is the new recruiting calendar. We’re back to normal. I can’t point to anything significant that has changed. I don’t think these kids were even thinking about it. It’s not like we opened recruiting calls with it. It just died off." (link)
Wisconsin completed a seven-month review of the athletic department's health and safety policies and procedures and found that the biggest takeaway was "greater monitoring of access to, and traffic in UW athletic facilities." The review, which included input from 700 student-athletes and 400 staffers: "While staffing of athletic trainers has increased significantly, a further analysis of staffing in this area is needed to ensure that the needs of UW student-athletes are being met. Student-athletes desire improved mental health services, which reflects a similar need across the student body as a whole. UW Athletics will survey appropriate staff and students to determine the adequacy of the department’s services in this area. The department will work to improve the communication of its processes to student-athletes and staff so they are clear on how (and to whom) to report health and safety concerns, including sexual assault and harassment. The department is already at work on this." AD Alvarez: "The health and safety of our student-athletes and staff are my top priority. I am both thankful that we have much already in place that addresses those needs and appreciative of the thoughtful recommendations the review has yielded. The bottom line is that this review will make Wisconsin Athletics better." (link)
Texas Tech is believed to be the first school to utilize VERT wearable athletic technology during its gameday experience as Red Raiders fans can test themselves in the coming weeks at a variety of different sporting events. Today fans can measure their football throw and compete for prizes if they throw touchdowns. On Thursday night they were able to measure their vertical leap compared to members of the WBB squad. (link)
Tragic news for the LSU family as MBB junior forward Sims was shot and killed overnight near Southern University. Tigers MBB HC Wade: "This is your worst nightmare as a coach. This is what you worry about at all times. There’s problems everywhere, so you just want to educate your guys as best as possible to stay away from those situations and unfortunately, sometimes, these lessons are the toughest. Everybody on the team loved him. He got us going in practice. He would do anything for anybody on our team." AD Alleva calls it "senseless and tragic." (link)

School estimates the repair costs at $100K+. (link); North Texas has implemented the "Return to Learn" concussion protocol this season (link); Tulane's 'turnover beads' have the school logo on them. (link); FOX Sports said Colorado's mascot was "probable" ahead of last night's game with UCLA. Guessing he stayed away from the tee shirt canon.
