9|29|18 For Richer, For Poorer

<<First Name>>

Did you know the divorce rate has been on the decline in recent years?  One reason, Millenials!  This past week a couple of articles caught my eye.  They all stated recent studies like one done by Bloomberg, noting the divorce rate from 2008-2016 has declined, in part due to Millenials bucking the trend.  While the divorce rate may still be incredibly high, there is hope.

For decades we have heard staggering divorce rate numbers, usually stating anywhere from 40-60% of marriages end in divorce.  These are not the odds you want to hear when you are considering whether or not to ask the question.  However, you can beat the odds.  In fact, one might argue, we must beat the odds, there is simply too much at risk if we don’t.

This weekend we are taking a look at a hard subject for many - divorce.  I’ll be the first to admit, the way we as a church have approached this subject hasn’t always been the most helpful.  Often we have heard messages filled with guilt, reminding us how much God hates divorce, or discussions about what circumstances are permissible grounds for divorce; however, I think Jesus challenges us to take a much deeper look at our relationships.

When Jesus is asked about divorce in Matthew 19, his response looks beyond the law to see what God intended for us.  Jesus was well aware of what was written in the law, but he was also aware of the damage that was caused through the abuse of it.  Jesus understood that a marriage is stronger than a certificate of paper, it is a bond that cannot be broken without tearing someone apart.  When we give ourselves to another in close meaningful relationships, there will always be some level of pain when that relationship comes to an end.

Whether you are looking to “divorce proof” your marriage, repair and heal what has been broken, or form a tighter bond with those you care about most, it is my prayer that you will “beat the odds.”  Because your relationships should be a gift.  God never intended them to be used to tear you apart.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Gordon
