The Town & Gown Players kick off their 2018/2019 season with the Off-Broadway musical favorite, Nunsense, by Dan Goggin.
Tragedy has struck the Little Sisters of Hoboken. Their trusty cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has served a tainted vichyssoise and now many of their order have gone to meet their maker. Most of the burials are complete, but the Little Sisters lack the funds to inter the last four of the departed. What will they do? What anyone in this position would – put on a show!
Mother Superior Mary Regina (Andrea Barra) and her fellow sisters take over the Mount Saint Helen's School auditorium to raise the necessary amount. Ballet-loving Sister Mary Leo (Abbey Hulsey), street-wise Sister Robert Anne (Vivian Vaeth), befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia (Jordan Richey), and mistress of the novices Sister Mary Hubert (Megan Powell) offer up a rousing evening of song, dance, and inappropriate ventriloquism sure to entertain their guests and get those unfortunate, remaining nuns out of the freezer.
Town & Gown’s production is directed by Mary Herman, who has worked extensively with the Players as a performer, technician, and Assistant Director. Musical direction is by Sam Hopkins, who will be familiar to audiences from his onstage work in other Town & Gown musicals such as Assassins, 1776, and Curtains.
Beginning as an idea for a line of humorous greeting cards, Nunsense opened Off-Broadway in 1985 and ran for more than 3600 performances. Since then, it had blossomed into a theatrical empire, spawning six sequels, three spin-offs, and a television adaptation starring Rue McClanahan.
Tickets for Nunsense are $20 ($15 for students and seniors), and can be purchased by calling 208-TOWN (208-8696) or going online . The show opens at 8:00 p.m. October 5, at the Athens Community Theater located behind the Taylor-Grady House on Prince Avenue. A reception follows the opening performance. Additional performances of Nunsense will be at 8:00 p.m. October 6 and 11-13, 2:00 p.m. October 7 and 14, 2018. Thursday night’s performance offers a special student/senior ticket for $12.
