LMC Family and Community Newsletter
October 1st - October 5th, 2018
  • Throughout the year, look here for shout outs and appreciations for our community members!  Or even better, send a shout out of your own to be published in the weekly newsletter.  Submit your shout out by emailing it to Kelly McGuire - kmcguire@lmc896.org
  • Shout out to our PTA who ran an incredibly productive and informative first meeting of the year!  A special shout out to our new PTA and SLT members:  Archana, Paul, Brenda, and Alison!
  • Shout out to our small army of library volunteers!  We need you and appreciate all of your support.  Last year we could barely keep up with the circulation of books going out and coming back into the library.  Thank you for your support in keeping books in the hands of our kids!
  • A shout out to all who have donated to the direct appeal!  We are so appreciative of your work to help make LMC a special place for all kids.
This Week at LMC
  • Student council season is heating up!  Posters are going out, campaign goodies being shared and HOPEFULLY some great speeches are being written.  This Wednesday, 7th and 8th graders will hear speeches from candidates for grade level representatives, vice president, and president.  Thursday AM at 8:30am 6th grade candidates will deliver their speeches for class representative.  They will also hear from 7th and 8th grade candidates for VP and president.
  • Who's on trial?  In 6th grade a group of suspects are being questioned by their classmates to find out who left the evidence!

Dear LMC Families,

This Friday we will host our first Open Classroom morning of the school year.  Open Classrooms at LMC is a time for any parent / family member to visit their child's classroom in action.  There are two goals for LMC Open Classrooms:
  1. We want to encourage dialogue between parents and LMC staff regarding the work we do in the classroom so that parents can learn more about the curriculum and classroom instruction.  This is an especially important opportunity for our 6th grade families.
  2. We want to encourage and create dialogue and relationships amongst our parent community.  LMC Open Classrooms is an opportunity to facilitate conversations between parents who may not know each other.
LMC Open Classroom will follow this format on Friday morning:
  • At 8:20am parents / families will be welcomed up to the 7th floor.  Coffee will be served.
  • Kelly McGuire and Shanna Douglas will offer a few remarks regarding the structure for the morning
  • 8:40am (approx) - 9:15am - Parents visit classrooms.  You can visit your child in his/her class, but also observe other classrooms if you choose to do so.
  • 9:20am - We reconvene on the 7th floor. Parents who can stay will join a short debrief, Q and A, and conversation with our LMC principal / vice principal, literacy coach, math facilitator, and other teacher leaders
  • No RSVP is required - just show up!

Best,
Kelly McGuire

AND ALSO!

Dear Dance Families,

I always wanted to be a dancer, but my career peaked in 11th grade when I did a half-time trio act to Bel Biv Devoe's, Poison. Thankfully I have been lucky enough to work with Riley Ayndow, a true artist who has had the vision to not only develop our dance course into the very special program it is today, but also the broader vision for what could be possible in a middle school arts program.  Over the past 9 years Riley has produced countless shows, mentored new teachers, and conceived of and implemented a high school preparation program for students applying to arts high schools.  For the remainder of the year Riley will shift her work, full-time to our science and special education departments.  She has a deep science background and an amazing pedagogical toolkit and I have no doubt that her impact on the children of LMC will continue to be deep and meaningful.

Kelly

Can you help?
Here are some things we could use this week:
  • Our teachers meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays for adult learning and collaboration.  We meet until just about 4pm and in those hours following dismissal teachers get hungry!  If you'd like to help, sending in a little snack for our teachers on those days is always appreciated!
