Busy football Saturday? Not have time to read D1.ticker? Here it is.
Watch: San Diego State AD Wicker, clad in a red & black scarf, talks about the on-going Mission Valley facility development plan. Lots of great renderings & design elements shared as part of Wicker's interview. Something I didn't know: Over 50% of the space will be park & paseo (def: a plaza or walkway for strolling) spaces. Wicker: "I think it's important to recognize that it's a community stadium. We're building it for the community of San Diego because we know that no one else is probably going to come back in and build a new stadium anytime soon and we want to address the full needs of the community." More. (link)
The Hartford Courant's Anthony says the NCAA's charge of unethical conduct by former UConn MBB HC Ollie validates Huskies AD Benedict's leadership change for "just cause." More from Anthony: "Friday brought a sort of Bizarro World feel to this process. When a university is issued a notice of allegations, it is rarely eager to show it off. But the notice’s details only supported UConn’s 'just cause' decision and left Ollie -- whose legal bills must be astronomical, and who recently hired a public relations firm – with a diminished case to bring to the arbitration table." (link); Another key media voice covering UConn is the CT Post's Jacobs, "Is UConn totally in the clear? I wouldn’t be shocked if the school got hit by some limited recruiting for a year or even a loss of one scholarship. May even be self-imposed. What with lawyers’ fees, PR fees, divorce settlement — if I humbly could give KO a piece of career advice: Get a job on an NBA coaching staff or front office ASAP. Put this behind you." (link)
UCF FB continued its run yesterday with a win over Pittsburgh & the Orlando Sentinel's Murschel takes a look at how the Knights are driving robust student attendance numbers. The student section inside Spectrum Stadium holds 12K & some students had to be turned away during UCF's first two home games. Assoc. AD for Strategic Communication Seeley says a new student ticket RSVP process gives the department a good indication on what kind of crowd to expect & when it might need to consider shutting down access to the space. UCF has exceeded 40K overall in its last four home games. (link)

Can you name the four cities which have hosted a Super Bowl, MBB Final Four & WBB Final Four? Atlanta, Dallas/Arlington, Indianapolis & New Orleans. Minneapolis is set to join the list after next year's MBB Final Four & city leaders are feeling good about their sports hub trajectory as they set their sights on the CFP & WrestleMania. Meet Minneapolis CVB Prez Tennant on missing out on the CFP in the last cycle, "Frankly, the College Football Playoff organization had some concerns about our ability to maintain that level of commitment from a fundraising and volunteer perspective, etcetera. But we are very interested in having those conversations again." More, including the market's long commitment to women's sports. (link)

The Providence Journal's McNamara pokes his head into Providence hoops' new $30M Ruane Friar Development Center that includes a nap room, two full courts, a TV studio, barber shop, float tank & lots more. Friars MBB HC Cooley says the space is as nice as any in the country, "We are the last school in the league to get one, but we are also the smallest school in the league. Our endowment is comparably small and we had to privately raise the money so a lot of credit goes to the team here at Providence." (link); Indiana opened its Roberts Family Indiana Basketball Team Center yesterday. The link includes some pictures of the lounge, locker room, training room & coaches annex. (link)
UW-Milwaukee's new Baseball home will be known as 'Routine Field' in an agreement between the venue's developers & Routine Baseball, a lifestyle apparel brand. (link); Kentucky Baseball opened its Fall schedule & the Wildcats' new stadium looks to be pretty much complete. Here's a pano video from the left field line. Looks to be the right size with attractive tiered patio-type seating beyond both dugouts. (link)
Tennessee MBB & WBB student-athletes met with fellow students last week to discuss their lives on & off the court. MBB's Fulkerson: "I think other people view us (athletes) kind of differently. They think athletes don’t have to go to class or don’t have to do this or don’t have to do that … I think the pros outweigh the cons. But there are cons like having to go to class every day when you get back late or you aren’t feeling well." WBB's Green: "If you go out, you can drink whatever you want or do whatever you want. But as far as my team, we can’t do that. We are always being looked at. There are definitely things we can and can’t do." The panel was part of the College of Communication & Information's Diversity & Inclusion Week. (link)
Interesting read from Ad Age on female fans of the NFL as Taylor Research Group found 45% of the league's supporters are women, but little marketing is directed to the important cohort. Key takeaway: "While male fans may be obsessed with all NFL content regardless of whether their team is playing or not, women fans are usually only interested in their team's game." Taylor's study also broke down female fans into two buckets - seekers & savors - who tend to be younger for the former & older for the latter. Seekers should be engaged on-site & in bars/restaurants, while savors need to be reached in-home. I wonder how much overlap there is with female college FB fans? (link)
Copenhagen Business School post-doc Pedersen and professor Ritter pen for the HBR: "Stress Test Your Company's Competitive Edge with These 4 Questions." The duo cautions that executives should be thinking about four different types of competition to maintain relevance in a changing environment: 1) Competition for relevance - Do our offerings satisfy real consumer needs?; 2) Competition for dependence - Can consumers supply their own solutions?; 3) Competition for preference - Do customers prefer us to our competitors?; and, 4) Competition for excellence - How can we renew our business? To succeed in answering these four questions: 1) Put the questions on the agenda and regularly challenge your strategy; 2) Let different employee types discuss the four questions; and 3) Implement strategic projects for all four types. (link)

The Athletic's 'People Behind the Program': Oregon's 84-year-old Assoc. AD Yamanaka is well known for his hand-crafted wooden bowls. AD Mullens calls him the "ultimate team player" as the Hawaii native has spent a 59-year career with the Ducks. (link); Notre Dame Stadium's longtime usher Spon celebrated his 82nd birthday yesterday, guarding over sections 19-24 as he has much of the past 47 years on the job. (link); Wisconsin FB's head video coordinator Schaefer leads a team full of students in fulfilling the coaching staff's requests for what angles and drills need to be recorded at each practice. Nicknamed "Big John," he says he wants to give students opportunities he didn't have at their age, when he took a job out of high school working on the sales distribution team for Coca-Cola. (link); After a 31-year career, Caldwell resigned as equipment manager from Penn State in 2014 to assume AD duties at Fair Haven Union HS. Three weeks into the new job, he suffered a heart attack, eventually resigned and six months later was re-hired at PSU as facility coordinator of the Nittany Lions' stadium. (link); Auburn's Football team begins each home game gathered in a circle at midfield around Tigers' longtime FB chaplain Williams. Former AU HC Tuberville: "He’ll do anything he can to help his players, even after they leave. He’s been a huge factor in hundreds of lives at Auburn." (link)
LSU held a moment of silence before last night's kick with Ole Miss to honor MBB student-athlete Sims, who was tragically killed on Friday. The PA announcer also changed his normal introduction of "It's Saturday Night in Death Valley" to "It's Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium." (link); Baton Rouge police have made an arrest in the shooting death of Sims. Police Chief Paul: "Wayde [Sims] stepped in to defend his friend and was shot." (link)
Yahoo's Forde reviews the gridiron action from yesterday, believes Notre Dame's path to the College Football Playoff is pretty clear, questions time & game management strategies around the nation from Louisville's Petrino to Penn State's Franklin, says we shouldn't forget about Washington & Michigan in the CFP picture & points to the end of UCF's schedules that includes tilts against still-unbeatens Cincinnati & USF. (link); USA Today's Wolken does the same: Thinks West Virginia should be "taken seriously," touches on "bad days" in the state of Mississippi, more. (link)
Also Noticed: Tennessee State FB student-athlete Abercrombie suffered a head injury in the second quarter of yesterday's game with Vanderbilt and was taken to the hospital for immediate emergency surgery. He remains in critical condition. (link); Didn't realize Clemson's digital team was executing a gameday vlog this season. Interesting stuff. (link); A couple tied the knot at midfield during yesterday's West Virginia at Texas Tech game. Seriously. (link); DAZN users say "way too many hiccups" with a high-profile MMA stream last night.
