Zebra Mussel Prevention
To date, we are not aware of any zebra mussels within Cedar Lake, but as you may have read, zebra mussels have recently been found in three more Twin Cities area lakes.  We strongly suggest you inspect your docks and lifts when you remove them from the water for the season this fall.  To help identify them, please see this website which contains more information.  If you suspect you may have found zebra mussels, please contact any of the lake commissioners listed on our website.
Fall Cleanup

Blowing or raking your tree leaves in the lake may have serious, negative side-effects on the water.

The district recommends that property owners not dump their leaves in the lake during their annual fall clean-up. This is because leaves have nutrients similar to fertilizer. They contain high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.  When leaves are naturally blown into the lake from trees on a shoreline, the lake can handle the influx, but when many lake residents dump hillsides full of leaves into the lake, it can upset the natural ecological balance.

When too many leaves are raked or blown into the lake it can cause an excessive amount of algae growth, and while the lake needs some algae for a healthy food chain, too much can cause problems. As the overabundance of algae dies, leaves decay, causing bacteria to use up the oxygen in the water. This can kill fish and other aquatic life, ultimately harming lake water quality.

Monthly Meetings
The lake district commissioners have regular monthly meetings and they are open to the public.  They are normally held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 5:30 P.M. at the Alden Town Hall.  Agendas are posted on the website prior to the meeting.  Likewise, minutes from the meetings are posted on the website a few days after meetings are held.  Come on out to a meeting and see what is going on with your lake association!
