The Washington Post's Maese & Stubbs release a number of new allegations against on leave Maryland FB HC Durkin, former Strength & Conditioning boss Court & other Terps officials, after talking to former student-athletes & players. The mother of a former student-athlete anonymously delivered a letter to UMD leaders back in December of 2016 that called out Durkin, "The fact that he allows his coaches to psychologically, physically, and emotionally abuse the athletes is paving the way for a multi-million dollar civil lawsuit against the school and the coaches, alleging assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress." Former student-athletes point to Durkin & Court playing favorites & bestowing gear, food & massages for those in his circle, while those outside "were fed hot dogs and beans." Video taping student-athletes throwing up in trash cans during workouts was allegedly a thing, as was showing highlights of animals killing each other during team meals & in the training room. In another reported instance, Durkin reportedly used derogatory insults toward a student-athlete as he laid on a training table with full body cramps. Others interviewed continue to support Durkin & his methods. Terps AD Evans: "These allegations, if true, are unacceptable. We will not tolerate any behavior that is detrimental to the mental or physical well-being of our student-athletes. When the commission completes its charge, we will act decisively and take all actions necessary to ensure the safety of our student-athletes." Lots more. (link)
Yahoo's Forde, Thamel & Wetzel go in on the MBB-FBI trial set to begin today featuring former Adidas employee Gatto. From a source close to the case, "Over the course of these three trials, you’re going to see major programs get touched by this, and the nature of how business is done is going to be exposed. The question is, 'How many?' The coaches who are mixed up in this are used to controlling everything, and they’ll have no control in how all this comes out." Doesn't look like there are any "bombshells" on the witness list. Dentons partner Hill Jr.: "We don’t know yet whether that relative silence following the indictments is evidence of a weak case or someone methodically putting their evidence together and being ready to put it forward at trial. […] You should never be surprised at what unanticipated consequences come out at a criminal trial." A bit more. (link)
UMass FB HC Whipple will not coach the in Minutemen's next matchup - versus USF - after using "rape" in his post-game comments after the Ohio game. Specifically, Whipple used the word in reference to the Bobcats defense & a penalty flag that was picked up by officials during a critical juncture of the contest. Whipple, who will also participate in sensitivity training, "I am deeply sorry for the word I used on Saturday to describe a play in our game. It is unacceptable to make use of the word 'rape' in the way I did and I am very sorry for doing so. It represents a lack of responsibility on my part as the leader of this program and a member of this university's community, and I am disappointed with myself that I made this comparison when commenting after our game." UMass AD Bamford, in part, "Coach Whipple's comments don't reflect the values of this institution, our athletics department or football program. Mark is disappointed in himself and understands his serious error in judgment." (link)
Utah Prez-elect Watkins asked how to appropriately balance the arms race around college athletics & continually rising HC pay with the overall mission of the university. Watkins: "We need to have the conversation be aligned on our values & our goals & our direction. Those issues of competing for talent are every bit as true in the academic arena as they are in the athletic arena. A strong element here is setting our compass on the institution we want to be & being effective in the competition for top talent." (link)
Delaware AD Rawak, Tennessee Tech's Wilson & Saint Peter's AD Felt sit for a conversation on stakeholder management. Key conversation lines: how to best involve stakeholders in decision-making, determining influential supports & reconciling differing opinions. Rawak: "In our world, perception equals reality. So we have to choose how we are going to take on that perception. […] Athletics is an investment, not an expense...people treat investments a lot differently than they do their expenses." Wilson: "At my institution, our number one stakeholder is our students. […] Realistically, everybody is a stakeholder and what you need to do is work with them to get everybody on the same page." UC Davis has a new 10-year university strategic plan & here's the mention of athletics, "Enhance our prominence in athletics. UC Davis student-athletes’ stellar academic and post- graduation achievements have long been our signature competitive advantage in the NCAA Division I arena. Taking this leadership to the next level, we will establish UC Davis as the nation’s premier athletics program for producing successful student-athletes. As we continue to build a nationally competitive Division I program, we will implement a systematic personal and professional development program that prepares our athletes academically and socially for success in their postgraduate careers and serves as a model for the entire campus." (link)
Nebraska AD Moos adds country club memberships at Firethorn, Champions Run & the Country Club of Lincoln for himself & key members of the Huskers fundraising team. Sounds like no cash was exchanged, though details of the trade agreements were not disclosed. Huskers CFO Jentz: "The new approach to country clubs is not an employee perk. It is an avenue to get business done by those in the development office and the athletic director." (link)
NCAA Director of Inclusion Wilson, along with Arizona State AD Anderson & others talk about the challenges of women being hired in more HC roles. Wilson points to males in decision-making roles selecting leaders with whom their comfortable, which tends to be fellow men. Anderson points to increasing salaries for women's sports HC positions that make them more attractive for males. ASU WBB HC Turner Thorne notes the difficulty for some women to balance work & home life. Wilson: "Once the president or chancellor sends that message, it usually trickles down, and you’ll see that there’s going to be better pools in terms of diversity coming forward. I think it takes decisive actions by the key leaders if we’re really going to see the needle move in this space." (link)
Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy emphatic that reporters could have asked, if they wanted to, about transfer McCleskey's departure. After Saturday's game: "I gave you guys all the information you needed, and I didn’t feel comfortable with you guys talking to the players, based on, that’s not something they should have to comment on. That’s a decision I make, and that’s their buddy, so I just wasn’t comfortable with it. You guys could’ve asked, if you wanted to. I didn’t keep you from asking. ... I’m not that powerful. You still could’ve asked. But anyway, I didn’t feel comfortable with those guys. I just didn’t want to put them on the spot. It’s almost like being in school, and you have a kid get in trouble, and then they ask the other kid what he did, and then if he rats him out, then he’s a snitch to his buddies, and if he doesn’t rat him out, the teacher gets mad at him. ... What I’d really like to do is talk about the football game, and get off the stuff that really doesn’t matter. ... Let’s get off of the stuff that drives this country and is taking it in the ground, which is garbage. Let’s talk about football. We don’t want to chase ambulances, man, let’s have some fun." (link)
More Personnel: Big Ten Commish Delany supportive of Illinois FB HC Smith and AD Whitman: "This is a tough league to get better in and everybody’s working hard, everybody’s got good talent, everybody’s got great resources. But I think that Illinois under Lovie’s leadership and with Josh’s support, they’ve got a great future." (link); Pac-12 boss Scott still optimistic for UCLA and HC Kelly, saying Friday: "I’ve been able to witness the great success he had at Oregon and I think it’s exciting for the conference (and) for UCLA to have Chip at UCLA. I think he’ll do very well." (link); Former Siena MBB HC Patsos enters his first season with NBC Sports Washington as a commentator. (link); Former Oregon State place-kicker Serna joins the Beavers athletic department as Director of Beyond Football, an "initiative that aims to transition student-athletes into their professional careers after their playing days are over." (link); Colorado State Prez Frank will step aside from his dual role as chancellor of the CSU Systerm & Prez of CSU campus in 2019, transitioning back to a full-time role as chancellor of the system. (link); Northern Arizona Prez Cheng gets an extension through June 2021, along with $35K in at-risk compensation. In June, her base pay was bumped from $390K to $475K and she will received a 3.5% increase in base salary on September 1 of each of the next three years. (link)
A trio of academics from the University of Bergen (Norway) contribute to this HBR piece: "Research: Women and Men Are Equally Bad at Multitasking." Using a computerized task - The Meeting Preparation Task (CMPT) - the group defines two types of multitasking - concurrent and serial. In the CMPT, 66 females and 82 males between 18-60 years old were put into a 3-D space, consisting of three rooms, a table and a projection screen, and required to prep a room for a meeting while dealing with distractors such as a missing chair or phone call, and to remember to do certain tasks in the future (i.e. put the coffee on the meeting table at a certain time). Conclusion: "We think it is fair to conclude that the evidence for the stereotype that women are better multitaskers is, so far, fairly weak." (link)

Looks like USA Today's Wolken got an advanced screening of the new "Student Athlete" documentary that's due out tomorrow night & comes from LeBron James' production company, SpringHill Entertainment. Wolken starts with a situation where current Kentucky MBB student-athlete Richards shows up for a Nike-sponsored event in an Under Armour t-shirt & doesn't have Nike shoes to wear. There's also former Baylor FB student-athlete Nacita's fight against the association, former North Carolina & Purdue FB OC Shoop's story, former Bradley MBB student-athlete Shaw's challenge of landing full-time work & health issues, as well as former Rutgers FB student-athlete Graves sleeping in his car to make ends meet. The one-year anniversary for Incarnate Word's DI FCS status is quickly approaching, and a year into his tenure Cardinals AD Wickstrom reflects on hiring FB HC Morris, which he calls a "no-brainer": "His commitment to winning and impact on student-athletes was one of the main reasons he got the job. But we wanted someone who understood and lived out UIW’s mission statement." Wickstrom also commended for facility improvements, being involved in the community and helping to get the WBB NCAA Final Four to San Antonio in 2021. WBB HC Smith: "His passion for student success both in and out of the classroom is welcomed. As coaches, he has made us feel comfortable and when our student-athletes feel comfortable, it makes out jobs a little easier." More Wickstrom: "The main goal of becoming a nationally recognized, top Division I Catholic institution. With a positive culture and following our school’s mission statement of core values, I feel we can achieve that." (link)
$500M over 20 years is the possible output for Arizona State for the developing Tempe Novus Innovation Corridor & by law the funds will have to be used to "construct or improve athletic facilities." Overall, the plan calls for 10M square feet of apartments, offices, hotels, shops & restaurants. It's ASU's land & businesses that build will owe the Sun Devils an assessment in lieu of property taxes. Arizona & Northern Arizona have the same opportunity, though neither say such plans are in the works. (link)
