Bathed in autumnal sunshine as the leaves begin to fall

Well plenty has happened here since our last newsletter and, as ever in this line of work, most of it has involved the weather. After a period of about 10 weeks we eventually had a lovely downpour of rain at the end of July, refreshing the garden and plants. It seemed the rain would never stop for a while, but by the beginning of August I was wishing the clouds back again as I spent most of the month watering.

For many weeks the warm sunny weather meant that plants came into flower much earlier and many plants in the garden have flowered out much quicker than normal. I suppose everyone has found this the case. One of the plants I am most pleased with this year is Angelica gigas, which has given us a wonderful show and the bees have loved it too. It makes a beautiful statement plant amongst grasses as the seed heads stand proud amongst the grass flower stems.

Seed collecting has been going on a pace across the nursery and we find it amazing sometimes how beautiful the seed heads of plants can be. Although we propagate many of our plants by vegetative means there are some plants that come true from seed. Some seeds germinate relatively quickly whilst others need much longer and require a cold snap, which we often provide by putting the seed trays in the fridge. We also store all our seeds in the fridge in small airtight jars. On receiving a request recently from Bejing in China for plants which, at present, we cannot accommodate, instead we collated a list of seed we could send, from which we have had a good response. Now that we have a collection of seed we will shortly be adding this to our website.

The autumn gentians are coming into their own at the moment, an easy plant so long as it has an acid soil. We have a few varieties available on the website to give a splash of colour, together with cyclamen. Hesperantha are great plants for autumn colour and we have four varieties available ranging from pale pink through to red. Verbena rigida has to have a mention here, I have one planted near at the entrance to the nursery. Not only has it been in flower all summer, it is still going strong this week.

This is a perfect time of year for plant fresh stock for a show the following year, especially bulbs.  We love all types of bulbous and tuberous plants and are constantly finding new varieties to add to the website. A favourite for spring colour and scent is Narcissus rupilcola ssp watieri, N. segovia, N. 'Exotic Mystery' and N. 'Tiny Bubbles'.
One of my favourite  plants which you could also class as a bulb or corm is Dicentra cucularia and we have just added the pink form to our online list, Dicentra cucularia 'Pink Angels'. Finally, I could not forget to mention the Anemone nemorosa, dormant at the moment but it's an ideal time to plant them for an incredible spring show of woodland colour.
