Network News

October 2018

The Discovery Network, a statewide program of the Museum of Discovery, was initiated in 2006 with funding from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. The Network's goal is to make hands-on, interactive STEM learning more accessible to the state’s school children and their families. The Network provides high-quality professional development, exhibits, and STEM kits for its members.
Upcoming Tinkerfest Events
It's that time of the year! Tinkerfest events are taking place all over the state. Tinkerfest gives learners of all ages the opportunity to immerse themselves in creative play and exploration. Tinkerfest features STEAM activities ranging from car take-a-parts and collaborative constructions to water play and cosplay. Don't miss the last two events of the year happening this weekend!

Upcoming Events:
Scott Family Amazeum - October 6th
       Bentonville, AR

September Tinkerfest Highlights
Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas
September 8th

The Pine Bluff museum held it's annual Tinkerfest event during one of its monthly Second Saturday Family Fundays. Families participated in a host of activities focusing on connections between the maker movement and health.
Kids Cook presented two cooking workshops where they learned about various cooking tools and made a healthy snack. The Discovery Network was able to bring our MakeyMakey Donkey Kong activity - built by the Scott Family Amazeum. Both activities were funded by a grant from the Blue & You Foundation.
Museum of Discovery
September 15th

The Museum of Discovery held its 7th Annual Tinkerfest last month! Families were able to engage in over 40 activities both inside the museum and outside along the streets in front.
Several member organizations of the Discovery Network came to help out including the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources, Mid-America Science Museum, the Scott Family Amazeum, Ida Burns Elementary, and the Girl Scouts STEAM Center! Our friends from Science Museum Oklahoma also made the trek to Little Rock with their Mega Big Nintendo game!
Network-ing About Town
Holy Souls Catholic School
Little Rock, AR

Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic School received training on our Light & Shadow Play kit. Students will use various materials - such as different fabrics, stencils and lights - to manipulate images and maybe even tell a story!
Episcopal Collegiate School
Little Rock, AR

Teachers at Episcopal Collegiate received training on our Fused Plastic and Fibers kits this month. These two kits inspire lots of creativity and design thinking and will help build fine motor skills for their little ones.
Gurdon Public Schools
Gurdon, AR

Three Gurdon Public Schools received kits of their own this month including LEGO Art Bots (pictured here).

Each school will be able to use two different kits through the end of the semester and will receive two new kits + training at the start of the spring semester.
STEM Excellence Pathway
We held our first of three workshops in the STEM Excellence Pathway program last month. Little Rock school teachers and administrators dove deep into what STEM means to them and what exceptional STEM provision looks like to their individual schools during the Emerging Workshop.

They also got a taste of what hands-on learning can look like during a circuit demonstration (pictured below). The schools will work on implementing action plans over the next few months then come back together in the spring to share challenges and successes.
