DOCSCAPES, a collaboration between the Hanson FilmTV Institute and the UA Center for Documentary, presents a screening of CALL HER GANDA with director PJ Raval in person.

The 2018 documentary, currently long-listed for an Academy Award®, focuses on the life and death of Jennifer Laude, a Filipina trans woman known as Ganda ("beauty" in Tagalog). When she is brutally murdered by a U.S. Marine, three women intimately invested in the case–an activist attorney (Virgie Suarez), a transgender journalist (Meredith Talusan) and Jennifer’s mother (Julita “Nanay” Laude) –galvanize a political uprising, pursuing justice and taking on hardened histories of U.S. imperialism.

POST-SCREENING Q&A with director PJ Raval

Hanson FilmTV Institute and Fox Tucson Theatre join forces to present the brand new digital restoration of the 1953 classic, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, directed by Byron Haskin, produced by George Pal, and based on the novel by H.G. Wells!

Only the second screening ever of the digital restoration, the evening will include an introduction by Arnold Leibovit, foremost expert on the works of George Pal, and Dr. Brad Schauer from the UA School of Theatre, Film & Television.

Join us in the lobby before the film where Tucson-based practical FX artist (read: monster maker) Quin Davis, known for his work on countless films including Battleship (2012) and Hancock (2008), has created an exact replica of the Martian from the film. Come dressed as your favorite alien or sci-fi creature, take a selfie with a real Martian, and enjoy the show!

In September, film and television director Allison Anders joined us for a screening of her 1987 film BORDER RADIO, the first in our film series On the Road with Women Independent Directors. Allison participated in a post-screening Q&A moderated by Hanson’s Director Vicky Westover, and the next morning shared advice gained from her 30+ year career with University of Arizona Film & TV students in Associate Professor Lisanne Skyler’s BFA Capstone: Pre/Production class. Thank you Allison, and come back to Tucson soon!

In September and October the Hanson FilmTV Institute was excited to host a Sitcom Lab with Brian Levant. Brian's name appears on over 400 TV episodes and pilots as a writer, show runner and director, and is best known for directing the films Beethoven, The Flintstones, Jingle All the Way and The Spy Next Door.

In the lab, UA students and members of the public began their professional training by creating a show about their own life. Over 6 evenings, the budding writers developed a concept, plotted a pilot episode, and concluded with a Skype pitch session to studio and network executives.
