November 2018
It was great that many of you were able to join us for our SDBC fall tournament held on Saturday, October 27th. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and feedback has been very positive. We saw some outstanding rallies in each of the groups and the level of play appears to be getting better and better.

The skills challenge was lots of fun and many "Oh Henry" bars and "Reece’s Pieces" were handed out. The serving challenge seemed to be the easiest way to get a treat, but Joey's quick reflexes made winning a lot more difficult in the "Smash and Score."

Thank you
It takes lots of people to help run a successful tournament. Thanks to Mario and Brenda along with the prep crew of Susan, Barb, Roger, and Mary Beth, who put on a delicious luncheon. Thanks to Janice, Paul, and Gale who managed the scorekeeping and timing flawlessly, except perhaps for the coffee spill on one of the scoresheets. LOL! Thanks also to the twenty plus people who offered to help set up on Friday evening even though in the end, we were unable to take you up on your offer. We'll definitely have to do it again.

Dan the Man
You may have noticed that last week one of our paddle trays fell off the top bunk in the storage room and shattered after hitting the floor. Dan B. picked it up, worked on it over the weekend, then came back on Monday with a new and improved paddle tray. No more having to force those thick paddles in too thin slots. Thanks, Dan!

Coaching Etiquette
Many of you have heard about the CBC news report on a pickleball feud in Vernon that spilled over into the courts. At the crux of the matter was an individual giving unwanted coaching tips to fellow players. Sad that it had to go to court to get resolved.

We do have an etiquette that we try to follow at SDBC when playing or spectating. Sometimes it's a fine line between a friendly tip during a game and unwanted coaching which can be repetitive in nature. If you feel that someone is giving you unwanted coaching, you can respectfully say that you don't wish to be coached. If you feel that the unwanted coaching persists, then please talk to one of the hosts. In the beginners' class on Wednesday and Saturday, teaching games can take place, but players should always be asked if they want tips. Sometimes we just want to play and have fun and enjoy our friends.

Thank you, and enjoy your pickleball and the fellowship!

General Rules of Play at SDBC

  • Sign in when you first arrive, so we can keep track of how many players show up for each session.
  • In consideration of others playing at the current session, please do not enter the gym any earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of your session.
  • Only attend one playing session per day.
  • Remember to pay the $2 per player fee, each session you play.
  • Wear gym shoes to prevent injury from slipping.
  • Bring your own water bottle.
  • When there are 4 or more players waiting, the game ends when one of the teams reaches 9 points. No 2 point difference.
  • After your game, place your paddle in the rack oriented for winner or non-winner. The next four players to go out will be according to the orientation of the closest paddle to the beginning of the rack.
  • At the end of the final session of the day, please help clean up and put away all the equipment and chairs. The gym must be vacated within 10 minutes of the end of the session, in order for the church to be secured.
  • Level of Play: Play at the session that is appropriate for your skill level. If you need any assistance determining your skill level, please ask one of the hosts.
  • Rating Descriptors: Skill level ratings can be broken down into a range between 1.0-5.0. An advanced player is highly skilled and has mastered third shots, dinks, and lobs, and understands body and court position. Find your rating here.

*Maximum number of 20
Our numbers are increasing for most sessions and, as winter is soon upon us, we may see an even greater increase in interest in playing at the church. In some sessions, we have implemented a maximum of 20 so that all those players that come for that session get adequate game time. We don't want to turn away players at any time, but ,unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to get more access to the gym due to maintenance and other bookings.
