Welcome to the Northey Street City Farm E-news for October 2018

AROUND THE FARM

Last month we collected vegan produce at our Sunday Organic Markets and delivered it to the Sea Shepherd crew who were moored in Brisbane. Thanks to the Northey St Sunday Organic Market stall holders and community who donated produce, to the people who delivered the produce, and to the crew of Sea Shepherd for your great work in ocean conservation. If you are interested in ocean conservation, please come to our screening Thursday night (4th of October) of Chasing Coral followed by a discussion with Angus Gorrie from OzFish Unlimited, Australia’s premiere recreational fishing conservation organisation.  Angus will be discussing their Moreton Bay Oyster Reef Project, which is aiming to right the wrongs of our past and restore critical habitat to the bay. Northey Street City Farm members can come for free and other guests are asked to donate $5. Book HERE.

This month we are celebrating Organic October! Be a part of the organic revolution and make a commitment to buying organic this month. You can come to our Sunday Organic Market and support local organic farmers! Look out for the blue and green bunting which means those stalls are organically certified. Bring your bags or baskets to take home your produce, your keeper cups so you can enjoy a lovely organic coffee or chai, or your re-usable bottles so you can fill up on a delicious juice, green smoothie or kombucha straight from a tap. This month the Buchi stall has created a Very Berry Water Kefir. Come try it this Sunday. Hope to see organic revolutionaries and waste warriors at the Sunday Organic Markets this month! #organicoctober

We are still seeking expressions of interest from a First Nations woman to join our First Nations Advisory Group. If you are interested email:info@nscf.org.au.

THANK YOU
Thanks this month goes to the Beelarong Community Garden for donating a cargo bike to the Farm. We really look forward to putting our logo on the side and using it for great organic cargo and to help promote the Farm!

Also a big thanks to the Grand Section who came to the Sunday Organic Market with their touring exhibition of their push bike trip documenting Australian Architecture and the natural state of the country. It really was enjoyed by all those who saw it!

Spring is here and we’re excited about it! Our Sunday opening hours are back to 6am-12pm as it’s quickly getting lighter and warmer earlier.

We are currently working on the space out the back of retail and hope to have some of it opened up for extended retail space soon. We are also working on getting more urban gardening innovations including self-watering vertical gardens and raised bioponic systems installed and displayed in our nursery. These will showcase some of the many ways we can all grow food in our cities and hopefully inspire everyone who walks into the nursery.

We have a great selection of rare herbs this month thanks to warmer weather including comfrey, aloe vera, white sage, yarrow, moringa, yacon and more. Come and learn all of the diverse ways herbs can be used in the kitchen, garden and home.

Also coming this month are more fruit trees! Expect to see raspberries, blueberries, grapes, pomegranates and much more back on offer in the coming weeks.

Happy spring gardening everyone and we hope to see you in the nursery soon!
