OCTOBER 2018
The Department hosted a seminar on Wednesday, September 12th, organized by the Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan to highlight and promote research and development projects between Shizuoka and Nebraska. The delegation was be led by the Vice Governor of the Prefecture, Akihito Yoshibayashi and included faculty representation from the University of Shizuoka. Dr. Terry Howell Jr., Executive Director of the Food Processing Center also spoke during the seminar.
Dr. Bob Hutkins writes a monthly article for the Lincoln Journal Star newspaper called 'Ask the Food Doc.' Dr. Hutkins answers questions pertaining to food science. The October 'Ask the Food Doc.' answers the loaded question: Why is Wisconsin's ice cream better than NU's? To find out the answer you can read Ask the Food Doc at this link https://go.unl.edu/b927.
Several faculty and staff of the Department were honored for their work at the Celebration of Service, held on September 25th. During the ceremony led by Chancellor Ronnie Green, 961 faculty and staff were recognized for their dedication. Department  faculty and staff that were honored included, Jennifer Clarke (5 years), Lori Wentz (5 years), Brandon White (5 years), Richard Zbasnik (10 years), Connie Gebhardt (30 years), Randy Wehling (35 years), and Lynn Niemann (40 years).
October is Biosafety Month. The theme for this year is “Promoting a Culture of Biosafety and Responsibility.” Refresher training helps keep biosafety practices and concepts fresh so complacency does not develop and potential injury incidents in the lab are prevented. Refresher training takes 15 minutes or less and can be completed in one of 3 ways:
  1. Take the EHS online biosafety refresher module. This training only takes 15 minutes. https://ehs.unl.edu/web-based-training#BioRef
  2. Watch a short YouTube video with your lab, selecting from this curated list. https://go.unl.edu/tbp8
  3. Review an EHS Biosafety SOP in your lab meeting. https://ehs.unl.edu/sop/biosafety
Remember to keep a record of your training for future reference.
