Breaking news from RadPro

The first patient in the UK has been treated with a pioneering new radiotherapy machine.

The MR Linac simultaneously scans tumours inside the body while delivering X-ray radiation beams.

It means clinicians can plan and adjust radiotherapy in real time, allowing it to be more accurate than ever before. The team at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital in London describe the technology as "groundbreaking". They hope it will lead to more patients being cured while experiencing fewer side-effects. Barry Dolling, 65, who has prostate cancer, is the first patient in the UK to be treated.
He told me: "I feel privileged and excited to be part of this. I volunteered to be part of the Prism trial and feel my treatment and the research will help others diagnosed with prostate cancer in the future."

Modulated Electron Bolus from IEL

In complex treatment cases that require modulated boluses, outdated methods were delivering low doses to the target volume or compromising healthy tissues. Adaptiiv's modulated electron bolus enables cancer centres to produce boluses of varying thickness resulting in vastly improved dose distributions. The software demo below highlights the functions of Adaptiiv’s Simple and Modulated Bolus modules. The software integrates with the treatment planning system to create custom bolus structures that can be exported and 3D printed in a matter of hours.

On September 26th at 10 AM (EST) Physics World is hosting a webinar on "Machine learning and automation in radiation oncology" featuring Fredrik Löfman from RaySearch Laboratories and Tom Purdie from Princess Margaret Cancer Center.

During the first part of the webinar, Fredrik Löfman, head of machine learning at RaySearch, will discuss how RaySearch is pioneering machine learning for smarter and faster oncology software. He will talk about the upcoming machine-learning applications in RayStation that will be released in December*: automatic treatment planning and automatic organ segmentation. Furthermore, Löfman will discuss some of the other machine-learning projects that RaySearch is working on, such as target-volume delineation, analytics on oncology data and
RayCare as a learning system.

In the second part, Tom Purdie, medical physicist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, will talk about automatic treatment planning and machine learning from a clinical perspective. He will present results from a clinical comparison between retrospective plans and ML automated plans.

* Subject to regulatory clearance in some markets.

Work at the speed of thought

Neural impulses flash through our brains at up to 120 meters per second. You’re used to thinking fast. And the time it takes to go from decision to action can make all the difference. We believe software should help you work at the speed of thought – not hold you back. We’re taking the possibilities further, creating software that works the way you want to. Making automation smarter through machine learning. Giving you tools that free up time and resources. Cutting out repetitive tasks to enable more effective use of your clinical time. Together we are on a journey to optimal patient care, supported by resources that are as intuitive as they are efficient and powerful. You think it, we’ll enable it.

Other radiotherapy news – How can we address Radiographer shortages in Radiotherapy?

Michelle joins SCoR team to boost radiotherapy recruitment

Michelle Tyler has recently joined the Society and College of Radiographers’ team as Professional Outreach Officer - Therapeutic
Radiography, and is currently working on the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines Programme (SIHED) to promote the profession to school and college students across the UK.
“The SIHED programme is a £3 million, three-year initiative to help build the sustainability of four key allied health professions, therapeutic radiography being one,” says Michelle.
“The programme focuses on activities to support recruitment and retention to undergraduate courses, and strengthen pathways into the professions for young people and mature students.”

Shortage of therapeutic radiographers will have 'critical effect' if decisive action is not taken to recruit more

The Society of Radiographers has criticised ‘lukewarm efforts’ by the UK government and the health administration in England to address an ongoing shortage of the only health professionals qualified to plan and deliver radiotherapy, claiming that cancer treatment at centres could come to a standstill because there are not enough students being trained.

“For some years there have not been enough qualified therapeutic radiographers. This threatens to cause delays to patients receiving treatment,” said Richard Evans, the Society’s chief executive officer.
