Welcome Briana Bancroft

Briana Bancroft, or Bri, comes to us from a 15-year career in elementary education in Ishpeming, MI, and 3 years of engagement with Michigan’s Integrated Mathematics Initiative, most recently as a Foundations of Math instructor and a summer contractor for (Mi)2 in general. Her elementary school began using Delta Math as part of a math intervention effort last year. She will be our new Math Accessibility Specialist.

Bri’s background and geographical location expands the knowledge base of our staff, as she has experience teaching at the elementary level, teaching students with disabilities in inclusive settings, and teaching in a rural district. Her location in the Upper Peninsula will increase our capacity to work with schools and intermediate school districts in that area. Her background in math, including a college minor and being the math teacher for her departmentalized grade level, will inform her work as she supports sites in implementing approaches that improve math outcomes for every student.

For the first three years I was with (Mi)2, I wrote retrospectives in a fall newsletter. In those newsletters I reflected on the importance of patience, collaboration, and impact.  In this, my fifth year, I am thinking about moving fully into my role as Alt+Shift Coordinator, and supporting Bri as she takes (Mi)2 into the future. I look forward to working with her and continuing to support high quality math instruction across Michigan for all students.

Foundations of Math: Implementation Story

Michelle Marcus
Second Grade Teacher
Pembroke Elementary, Birmingham Public Schools

The main focus of implementation of Foundations of Math in my teaching is utilizing the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) model in my planning and teaching each day. It allows all students an entry point into the content. I have also begun paying closer attention to vocabulary and the components of number sense in my lesson planning and instruction. My colleagues and I have come to realize that math is not just a page in a book. Manipulatives, vocabulary, discussion, modeling, and equations all hold an important place in every math lesson.

A challenge that I encounter is knowing and understanding what misconceptions students bring with them to math class. To overcome this, I am working on deepening my own understanding of mathematics. By building upon my knowledge base, I hope to be better prepared to pre-plan for these instances.

My next step in implementing Foundations of Math is to continue to work with the CRA model in my lesson planning and instruction of our base ten system. We can build ideas and prove strategies work by using manipulatives.

Honoring All Math Strategies

Do you want to build better conversations in your math class? Do you hope to empower your students? In this We Are Teachers blog post, Maria Howard explains how our response to students’ thinking is so important to obtain these two goals. Her ideas get you thinking about how you respond when students share inefficient or hard-to-understand strategies in your math class and why honoring all strategies, even those you yourself would not use, is important.
