INSPIRING CHANGE
FL YMCAs APPROACHED BY INSURANCE COMPANIES FOR SAW PARTICIPATION

The Florida Alliance of YMCAs has been approached by Humana, Aetna, and WellCare insurance companies to provide safety around water/swim lessons to their participants statewide at local YMCAs. The insurance companies would reimburse for the swim lesson session provided to their participants.

These partnership could provide an unique opportunity to provide children with the life-long skills of swimming while increasing swim lesson participants at local YMCAs.

The Florida Alliance has sent communication to each CEO on participation of this program, and to collect initial thoughts about the partnership.

Further discussion about this will take place at the CEO Meeting, October 9th 2018. For more information or questions about this potential partnership, please contact Scott Fahrney.

Thank you to Amanda Walker & Matt Mitchell with the Tampa YMCA and other Tampa Bay Area YMCAs for starting this work with WellCare!

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
LOCAL DELEGATION MEETINGS

The start of the 2018-2019 Florida Legislative Session is upon us! To kick off the legislative session, legislators normally hold Local County Delegation Meetings in their home county(ies). These meetings will normally include introduction of proposed local bills, presentations focusing on economic development and upcoming legislative priorities of the members, as well as time to hear from local organizations and agencies.

The Florida Alliance of YMCAs Advocacy Team will be connecting with Ys to work with your association to attend delegation meetings of interest to Statewide efforts.

When considering attending a local delegation meeting here are some helpful tips:
  • Know your public officials - Find out more about them. What committees do they sit on? What things are they passionate about? Do any of those passions align with the Y commitment to strengthen communities?
  • Have an elevator speech - Have a clear, brief message about your Y and some of the initiatives you are working on.
  • Thank them - Thank them for their time, and commitment to the community they serve. You can do this face to face, with a card, or over social media.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

YMCA of the USA - 2019 Swim Lessons Scholarship Grant
Through funding from Y-USA’s Strategic Initiatives Fund, local Ys can provide swim lesson scholarships to vulnerable and low-income youth who otherwise would not be able to afford program fees. The intent is to reduce the financial burden on Ys and help them reach children and families who would not be able to take swim lessons without these scholarships. Grants are available in amounts of $3,000 (to offer 50 individual swim lesson scholarships), $4,500 (to offer 75 scholarships), and $6,000 (to offer 100 scholarships). In addition, the applicant Y must demonstrate ability to adopt Safety Around Water as a drowning prevention program to add additional weight to their score.

This grant opportunity will be available to approximately 432 Y branches and opened September 17, 2018, via EasyGrants http://grants.ymca.net/and close October 5.
