Community Bytes

A newsletter from your local charity focusing on community spaces across Merton, and how we use these to connect people, places and passions.
A Note From The Wimbledon Community Association (WCA)

Welcome to the third edition of Community Bytes, our monthly e-newsletter which brings you community related news alongside a range of other topics. In this edition we welcome the Autumn season which is set to bring us much cooler weather, as well as countless events across the Borough of Merton and the more widespread celebration of National Libraries Week. Although the drop in temperature often seems like a good time to stay at home and keep warm with loved ones, it is a good time to meet with others in our local communities and enjoy the many local events on offer. Whether you're interested in cultural events, Halloween, bonfire night, firework displays, scenic walks, or Christmas fairs, there is something for everyone happening across Merton during the upcoming months. In this newsletter, we have compiled some key dates for your diary, including our Annual General Meeting which all of our members are invited to attend at 18:45 on Wednesday 28th November at the Mansel Road Centre. Additionally, our community noticeboard showcases some great events, but to avoid missing out we also encourage you to look out for events happening at your local schools, places of worship, community centres, and social/sports clubs.

On a final note, as we are developing Wimblecomm into your ‘Online Community Hub’ for Merton, we are always looking for volunteers who are able to spare some time to give back to their community.  If this is of interest, please refer to our Get Involved page for further information on what’s involved and how to get in touch.

We hope you find this e-newsletter useful!  If you would like to receive future editions, make sure you visit us at Wimblecomm and subscribe.

 Community Updates

Key Dates for Your Diary

Although the Winter season may come with shorter days and longer nights, there is no shortage of events happening in our community over the coming months; we have listed some below.
Venues on Wimblecomm

We are delighted to still offer free listings for not-for-profit venues that hire out community space in Merton, so if this applies, do get in touch today. We also encourage commercial venues that are interested in advertising on Wimblecomm to contact us and find out about our competitive advertising rates.

Pictured above is the Holy Trinity Church in Wimbledon which has been advertised on Wimblecomm for more than two years, and is  one of our longest standing venue members. This church offers four different spaces to hire and continues to be a great space for our community. Consequently the Holy Trinity Church is home to a variety of activities and groups, and has great transport links with both Wimbledon and South Wimbledon stations within walking distance. Their spaces for hire include the Church, Church Hall, St Cecilia Room and Committee Room which can all be enquired about through Wimblecomm at the touch of a button.

To register your venue, or find out more about listing a venue, click here.  Our membership policy for 2018/19 can be downloaded here, and our new flyer can be downloaded here.

This Month's Spotlight -
Merton U3A

Who are you?

We are a local charity commonly referred to as the Merton 3UA which stands for the Merton University of the Third Age. Together we have created a community for people who have retired from full-time employment, and want to stretch their minds, make new friends, and continue to enjoy life.

What do you do for the community?

We have nearly 100 friendly activity and study groups run by our own members. The groups cover an enormous range of interests. Our groups are informal and there are no qualifications or examinations attached. Most groups meet in members' homes during the day, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, and consist of between 6 and 12 people. In addition there are some larger groups that meet in the Wimbledon Guild Drake House, near Wimbledon Station or in Colliers Wood Community Centre.

Each group has its own volunteer leader or co-ordinator who has a particular interest or expertise in the subject. For modern languages, for example, most of the group leaders are native speakers of the language concerned.

Merton U3A members are retired or semi-retired and offer their services free of charge. This enables the annual subscription as a member to be kept low - £15 single and £25 double. These costs simply cover their expertise, use of a room in their home, or help with administration fees. From time to time, there may also be small additional charges for certain groups where a room is hired.

How can I find out more and get involved?

To become a Merton U3A member you do not have to live in Merton, and can complete an application form on their website. For more information, please visit their website directly at http://www.mertonu3a.org.uk

Christmas Creativity - Art & Gift Fair

On 8th and 9th December 2018, the Trinity Christmas Tree Festival will take place in Wimbledon, supporting London’s Air Ambulance. Featuring around 40 beautifully and thoughtfully decorated and illuminated trees, the church will be filled with light to make a spectacular display throughout the building, especially as daylight begins to fade. This year’s theme is “The Symbols of Christmas." The WCA have proudly sponsored this event in the past, and are happy to sponsor a tree again this year!

They will also be running a Craft and Gift fair on the Saturday from 11:00 until 15:00 where you will be able to purchase a variety of gifts for your friends and family whilst enjoying the Christmas spirit. If you are interested in having a stall at the fair, you may contact the team directly at office@trinitywimbledon.org or see their website for further contact details.

Event Review - Abundance Fruit Day
Written by Jil Hall, Joyce Pountain, Sue Lovell-Greene

There was another successful Fruit Day at St Marks Church Saturday 15th September. The apple press was going strong, producing litres of lovely fresh apple juice, the cake stall and honey stall (featuring Tooting honey and Martin Way honey) were busy as usual and we had the most amazing longest apple peel competition with a peel a metre long. Plus there was an opportunity for people to make their own apple pies and fun games for children to play.

There was a huge abundance of jams, jellies and chutneys in a variety of jars which were on sale; all made by our dedicated local makers. With so little fruit available this year, we were worried that we wouldn’t have enough, but our makers surprised and delighted us with their amazing choices of fruit and vegetable offerings.

The mayor, Mary Curtin, and our local MP Stephen Hammond came to visit, and we were entertained by the International Ukulele Orchestra and the Treblemakers singers. The sun shone on us and we were able to raise over £700. Many thanks to all who organised this and helped to make it such a success.

Abundance is a registered charity which campaigns against food waste and offers practical help to use local produce. Abundance Fruit Day is our annual event for selling jars of jams, jellies, chutneys, cakes, freshly-squeezed apple juice and lots more made from unwanted fruit from local gardens.

There are lots of fruit trees in the Wimbledon area, but much of the fruit falls on the ground and is wasted. Abundance helps people to access this fruit and pick it. Our main objective is that the fruit gets used. If at the same time, we can help people who might be struggling with the cost of fresh food, share skills, reduce waste and have fun doing all of this, so much the better!

Merton Libraries Celebrate National Libraries Week
Written by the Merton Libraries Team

Merton’s award-winning libraries will once again be celebrating National Libraries Week, from 8-13 October, by offering the community a variety of events and activities to suit all ages.

To coincide with National Libraries Week the 'London Libraries Festival - World of Possibilities' will be running on 13 October and events will be hosted all across the capital. All of Merton's Libraries will be running special events in their library to celebrate. Wimbledon library will host its first ‘library lates’ event on Saturday 13 October, an evening with free talks on health and wellbeing and a free film screening. Doors open at 5.45pm.

Each library will be holding a range of events throughout the week with sessions to suit everyone. An event not to be missed takes place at Wimbledon Library on 11-12th October. The Paper Traveller, written and directed by Marie Klimis, is an immersive theatre project made specifically for libraries. The production brings a unique storytelling experience to audiences across London. Made up of a series of sound installations, pop-up books, and live performance, The Paper Traveller uses multidisciplinary practice to explore the event of becoming lost inside a book. Click here for more information on events planned for NLW.

Community Forum meetings regularly take place at venues across the borough and are a great way for you to raise issues within your area with local councillors. All issues raised are referred to the organisations responsible who report back to the forum on how they have been resolved. Visit the official website to get involved.

A Time of Creativity in Merton

"Entering the Autumn season and having to trade in summer attire for big jumpers and more layers is probably one of the least favourite times of the year for many of us in the UK. But with so many creative events happening on our doorstep, it is actually a rather great time of year for Merton..."

On the
Wimblecomm blog, Genevieve Etienne-Farrell reflects on her favourite moment from this year's Merton Arts Festival, and gives us a rundown of the many creative events that are coming to Merton in the next few months.
