Bridging the Funding Gap to Support Needed Services for Students, Enhance Faculty Engagement and Provide Funding for Innovative Programs
Grant Funding Supports MESA Program Launched at SFCC
SFCC is one of six Washington Community Colleges recently selected to join the Washington MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) program, which helps academically talented and underrepresented community college students to excel in college and ultimately earn STEM bachelor’s degrees.

Specifically, a $125,000 annual SBCTC grant allows SFCC to provide:

  • Exploration of opportunities in STEM careers, learning strategies and other tools for success.
  • A dedicated study center, which opened in January
  • STEM orientation course (academic development, industry know-how)
  • Academic excellence workshops in “gatekeeper” courses
  • The hiring of an on-site MESA Director, Janae Carrothers
  • Academic advising tailored for university transfer in STEM degrees

NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Program Funds Geographic Information System (GIS) Project at SCC
PI/Co-PIs: Marilyn Neilson, Dave Stasney, Erin Rudders

SCC's Water and Natural Resources Management faculty will deliver workshops for college instructors and K-12 teachers to support an expanded application of Geographic Information System (GIS) skills in the STEM classroom.  The on-site instruction will include collaboration with several Northeast Washington high schools, as well as faculty at the CCS rural sites.  The project is designed to provide GIS tools, pedagogy support and skills-based knowledge to rural high school teachers, while also engaging student interest in STEM-related environmental technician career pathways.

Interested in becoming a NSF Peer Reviewer?  The National Science Foundation (NSF) encourages faculty to serve as participants in the peer review process by helping to determine the merits of proposals submitted for funding.  In addition to providing a great service to NSF and the science and engineering communities, reviewers can also be beneficiaries by graining first-hand knowledge of the peer review process; learning about common problems with proposals; and discovering strategies for writing strong proposals.  By serving on a panel, reviewers can expect to meet colleagues and NSF program officers who are managing programs related to their specific areas of interest.  NSF depends upon the reviewer community drawn from experts from diverse backgrounds in STEM disciplines to complete nearly 240,000 reviews per year. SCC Awarded $120,000 to Provide a New Industrial and Manufacturing Technology Program in Colville
Grant Administrator: Jaclyn Jacot

SCC’s Colville Center received an SBCTC Workforce Development grant to offer a new certificate program beginning fall 2019. This new program responds to a workforce need expressed by local manufacturing employers having difficulty finding enough workers with the technical skills required for increasingly mechanized manufacturing production processes.

Learning How to Submit Successful Grant Proposals
Local funders recently advised CCS faculty and staff on best practices for submitting successful grant requests to their organizations during the OG&SR Community Funder's Forum.   Approximately 25 SCC and SFCC faculty and staff attended the event held at SCC.  Five representatives from Avista Foundation, Empire Health Foundation, Kalispel Tribe, Umpqua Bank, Hagan Foundation and Innovia Foundation provided insights on their funding priorities, funding cycles, application processes and examples of successful proposals.

Post-Award Workshop

Receiving a grant award is only the start of the journey.  Grant awardees and administrators are responsible for managing extramural funding with good stewardship and maintaining a pro-active focus on budgeting, program management and compliance. CCS staff Gloria Sapounova, Grace Leaf and Mysti Reneau provided an introduction to post-award grant responsibilities at a workshop held this past February.  More grant training opportunities will be available during the 2018-19 academic year.
