Greetings:

During my recent flight back to Michigan due to my father’s death, I watched a video instructing the passengers about emergency procedures.  One of these procedures is in response to sudden loss of air pressure in the cabin.  We were instructed to place the air mask – which would appear from the ceiling – on ourselves and then if we had children to put masks on them.  I can only imagine that in the event of loss of air pressure in the cabin it might not be so calm as the video showed.  After all from what I observed at cruising altitude of the plane it was 50 below zero and we were traveling close to 600 miles an hour – a chilling prospect to lose air pressure.
However upon further reflection it strikes me that being in the church can sometimes appear the same way.  For years a congregation can sail along when suddenly an incident occurs and panic ensues.  We have been repeatedly reminded that we are called to be followers of Christ and that after coming to know the truth of it for ourselves to share the message with others.  After all, Jesus sent out the early disciples after they had time to be with him and learn from him.  Unfortunately, there is a tendency to forge forward and then ask Jesus to bless our efforts.  Kind of like putting the air mask on your child first and then getting it on yourself.  Hopefully you won’t pass out before it is accomplished.  I think it can be a reminder to take the time to build practices – like prayer, devotional reading, holy conversations with others -  in one’s life to connect with Christ so that when trouble comes, which it invariably does, you realize that you’re not alone through the experience.
                           Grace and peace, Pastor Dan

As I've been sitting at my desk today, the song Psalm 23 keeps popping up in my playlist. After about the third or fourth time I realized ...He's trying to tell me something! I had a different verse planned but was really feeling conflicted because I felt like the Lord was placing an urgency in my heart to share this. I sat and asked "okay why this one God?" and listened to it again.  What struck me was how the song focused on victory and not being alone, that "he's my comfort, and always holds me close."  Growing up in the church, Psalm 23 always seemed like "the funeral Psalm" but hearing the song and then reading the Psalm it finally clicked. It's not just a funeral reading,. It's talking about the comfort and peace that victory in the lord brings; and how true to his word, he walks with us, guiding and protecting us until we dwell in the house of the Lord. Take a moment to listen t Psalm 23 and then read Psalm 23 this week and see what God's trying to tell you about it!
