The Long Awaited Laborshed is Kicking Off

Allamakee County Economic Development & Tourism is partnering with Iowa Workforce Development and Iowa Economic Development Authority to complete a Laborshed employment study for the Waukon area.  This study will geographically define which communities contribute to Waukon’s workforce, regardless of political boundaries. This defined area is called a Laborshed area and is based upon commuting patterns.

For the success of this study, we will be sending letters to employers in Waukon asking that they provide us with aggregate counts of their employees’ residential ZIP codes. This will allow us to determine what the scope and scale of Waukon’s Laborshed area is and better understand where Waukon’s workforce resides.

Once that Laborshed area is determined, a confidential residential telephone survey will be conducted to collect workforce characteristic information specific to the area.  The survey call originates out of Cedar Rapids, IA, therefore, the incoming number will have the 319 area code. It is possible that you may receive a text message from their 888 number as well, alerting you to expect a call from them to take the survey. Survey questions will cover topics such as: employment status, current and desired wages, current and desired benefits, education level, and type of occupation among other things. However, Iowa Workforce Development will not be asking survey takers identifiable information such as: name, social security number, or date of birth.

Your participation in this study will help economic development efforts and support both current and potential employers in your area.

Every year Iowa Workforce Development conducts Laborshed studies across the State. The results of each analysis are publicly available online at www.iowalmi.gov/laborshed.  If you have any questions about the Laborshed project, please contact Val Reinke at 563.568.2624.

Funding Available to Help Grow
Registered Apprenticeship Programs in Iowa
Proposals Due to Iowa Workforce Development by July 27

DES MOINES – Organizations are invited to submit proposals to Iowa Workforce Development to receive funding to grow Registered Apprenticeship opportunities in Iowa.

Iowa Workforce Development was recently awarded an additional $1 million ApprenticeshipUSA State Expansion Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to strengthen and grow Registered Apprenticeship opportunities in Iowa. The grant is focused on expanding opportunities in healthcare and advanced manufacturing, the fastest growing and largest employment sectors in the state, as well as increasing the participation of women, youth, minorities, veterans and people with disabilities.

Organizations may apply for funding in five areas: Quality Pre-Apprenticeship; High School Registered Apprenticeship; Healthcare Sector Registered Apprenticeship; Advanced Manufacturing Sector Registered Apprenticeship; and Pilot Quality Pre-Apprenticeship Program.

Gov. Kim Reynolds encourages organizations to apply for the funding to further grow Iowa's Registered Apprenticeship footprint.

"Increasing the number of Registered Apprenticeship Programs and Registered Apprentices will help us close Iowa’s skills gap and help Iowans pursue rewarding careers and good-paying jobs," Gov. Reynolds said. "Healthcare and manufacturing are critical to Iowa's economy, and it is vital we have the skilled workers for these jobs. Registered Apprenticeship growth is an important strategy to help our state reach its Future Ready Iowa goal of having 70 percent of its workforce with education or training beyond high school by 2025."

The funding proposals are due to Iowa Workforce Development by 1 p.m. on Friday, July 27. The full Request for Proposal (RFP) and  the guidelines for submitting a proposal is available online for the following programs:

  • Quality Pre-Apprenticeship Programs
  • High School Registered Apprenticeship Programs
  • Healthcare Sector Registered Apprenticeship Program
  • Advanced Manufacturing Registered Sector Apprenticeship Program
  • Pilot Quality Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Iowa Workforce Development received an initial $1.8 million ApprenticeshipUSA State Expansion Grant received from the U.S. Department of Labor in November of 2016. The additional $1 million in funding ends on Oct. 31, 2020.

Beth Townsend, Director of Iowa Workforce Development, said the additional funding can serve as a springboard for organizations to start a new program or support an existing program.

"More and more employers from diverse industries are finding a Registered Apprenticeship allows them to recruit, train and retain workers to build a workforce that meets their needs," Director Townsend said. "We are excited to receive this additional funding that we can share with organizations who are committed to growing Registered Apprenticeship opportunities, helping us to meet the Future Ready Iowa goal."

Registered Apprenticeship Programs help recruit, train a skilled workforce and retain talent. There are currently more than 1,000 apprenticeable occupations in industries that include energy, information technology, healthcare, financial services, transportation, advanced manufacturing, food and beverage preparation, and the building trades.

Iowa employers and job seekers can explore Registered Apprenticeship opportunities at earnandlearniowa.gov. The website helps employers understand how a Registered Apprenticeship Program works, the value it brings to their business, the resources available to help them set up a program and has a form to complete to receive more information.

Job seekers who are interested in exploring Registered Apprenticeship opportunities are encouraged to visit the website and fill out an online form to connect them to a local IowaWORKS Center. In addition IowaWORKS Center staff can help with resume preparation, cover letter assistance and mock interviews.

Northeast Iowa YMCA celebrates the Peace Pole

The Northeast Iowa YMCA, located on West Post Street, celebrated the Planting of its Peace Pole last week. The planting of the Peace Pole symbolizes the mission of the YMCA to work with people of all faiths and nationalities. The commitment to inclusion, it was noted, creates better communities, a better country and a better world.

The Peace Pole is imprinted with “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in English, Somali, Hebrew and Spanish.

The YMCA is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life as they work side by side to strengthen communities.

Together the organization works to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, age, cultural background, race, faith, gender, ideology, income or national origin has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity.

They are passionate about their cause to strengthen communities and know that their ability to achieve it begins with reflecting and partnering with people from all walks of life.

The Northeast Iowa YMCA is now registered as a Peace Site and is now is home to one of more than 200,000 Peace Poles around the world. The Peace Pole is a symbol that indicates the YMCA believes in peace. The Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family.

It is the hope of all those affiliated with the YMCA that the pole becomes a “Living Peace Pole”, a gathering place for people throughout the community to reflect.

The Peace Pole was made possible through the generosity of the Allamakee County Community Foundation as they support the mission to strengthen communities.

May peace be in our homes and in our communities.
