Draft Political Declaration for UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs
Draft Political Declaration for UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs lacks strength and ambition
The omission of a sugar tax from the Political Declaration to be adopted at the third United Nations High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases (UN HLM on NCDs) being held in New York on September 27 is just one of a number of weaknesses in the final document that fails to commit governments to act and avoid a global health epidemic that could lead to millions of preventable illnesses and deaths.

NCD Alliance and Resolve to Save Lives Partner to Eliminate Industrially-produced Trans-fatty Acids

Eliminate Industrially-produced Trans-fatty Acids
The NCD Alliance and Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies, are proud to announce their new partnership to implement actions in support of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) REPLACE action package, a step-by-step guide for the elimination of industrially-produced trans fat from the global food supply.

Consumption of industrially-produced trans fat (common in baked goods and pre-packaged foods) is a major contributor to cardiovascular diseases and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) worldwide, estimated to contribute to over half a million deaths every year. Eliminating industrially-produced trans fat from foods has already been done in several high-income countries, our goal is to completely remove this toxic substance from the global food supply.

Most Countries Won’t Meet UN's 2030 Target for Reducing NCD Deaths

Most Countries Won’t Meet UN's 2030 Target for Reducing NCD Deaths
The majority of the world’s countries aren’t on track to meet the United Nations' target of reducing premature deaths from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) by a third by 2030, researchers report in the current edition of the Lancet.

Senior author Majid Ezzati et al. estimated more than half of all countries would fail to meet sustainable development goal (SDG) target 3.4 - an effort to minimize the number of early deaths from cancers, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes. The analysis is part of the “NCD Countdown 2030” and was published a week ahead of the third UN High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases, which kicks off Sept. 27.
