T&T teenager Deen on top in Caribbean SR3 Cup

Trinidad & Tobago teenager Isa Deen stood on each step of the podium on September 2 to end the day top points-scorer in round three of the Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup (RCC). Deen’s victory in race three followed those of fellow-countryman Kristian Boodoosingh and Mark Maloney of Barbados in the earlier encounters, in which Deen had already finished second and third. Despite failing to add to his tally of two wins each in the earlier rounds, Maloney’s brother Stuart still leads the regional series ahead of the final round in Guyana in November.

The championship’s most competitive day of racing yet repeatedly brought the Williams Digicel International Race Meet crowd to their feet, as the Suzuki-powered Radicals diced wheel-to-wheel on the 2.01-kilometre International Circuit. Three more drivers were podium finishers – points-leader Stuart Maloney, his brother Sean and Suleman Esuf, the last two both former SR3 Cup Champions – while there was a spread of only eight-tenths of a second across each driver’s best lap time of the day.

Heading in to the third round, having claimed four wins from the six races at the Frankie Boodram Wallerfield International Raceway in June and on the Bushy Park National Circuit in July, Stuart Maloney had a 22-point advantage over Mark. Not only is his lead now reduced to 13 points, but Deen’s results have promoted him to second place, ahead of Mark, with Boodoosingh fourth. With 75 points on offer in the final round, at South Dakota in Guyana on November 11, there is still all to play for at the top of the Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup standings.

Walcott increases advantage in BADD standings

After damaging his engine in the previous round in July, Andre Walcott has now extended his lead in the Barbados Association of Dragsters & Drifters (BADD) Launch Control points standings following a successful outing on September 16. Despite frequent showers around the island earlier in the day, BADD ran without any interruptions from the weather, which had caused them so many issues in recent times, and members raced in front of a sizeable crowd on The Hill.

From an entry of 32, there were 17 starters for the bracket racing, so just three merged groups were contested. Driving his Suzuki Swift, in which has once again won the Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc (BPMSI) Group 1/Class 1 title, Walcott won the 12.9 to 10.0secs division; Daryl Inniss (Mitsubishi Colt) was the winner in the 9.9 to 9.0secs bracket, with Ahmed Esuf claiming honours in the night’s fastest group, 8.9 to 7.0secs in his Radical SR1, in which his brother ‘Sol’ set a new record 60ft time of 1.41secs.

With just the final round in December to go, Walcott now has 340 points, giving him a lead of 45 over his team-mate Swift-mounted team-mate Shawn Eversley (295pts); Derek Pinto (Honda Civic Type-R) has moved in to third place, now with 293 points, while Tyrone Simpson (Toyota Corolla) is fourth on 257.

BADD Chairman Jason Downey said: “A number of drivers had issues, which was unfortunate, as we were hoping for more than one new record, but Sol Esuf did not manage any clean runs in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, fighting gremlins all night. We also made a point of recognising the second ‘D’ in the Club’s title and Geoffrey Ullyett kept the big crowd on The Hill entertained with some expert drifting demonstrations in his BMW M3.”

Barbados scores top at Williams Digicel International

Team Barbados was the top points-scorer in the third round of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) at the Williams Digicel International Race Meet on September 1/2, organised by Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc (BPMSI). More than 20 local drivers contributed to the 468 points scored, moving Barbados from fourth to second in the Country Championship standings, with Mark Maloney and Devan McCartney the round three Champion Drivers in CMRC Group 4 and the new-for-2018 Gp1 respectively, Maloney also rewarded for the day’s fastest lap for cars.

With 1,229 points in the provisional standings, Trinidad & Tobago is in a strong position to claim a third straight title, but the battle for the places is still on; Barbados has 618 points, around 150 more than at this stage last year, ahead of Jamaica on 526pts.

The return of Guyana’s Mark Vieira (Mazda RX-8) to the CMRC at Bushy Park for the first time since 2014 was much anticipated, but the action only lasted one race, which saw an enthralling battle with Maloney (RX-3), whose pass two laps from home earned cheers from the crowd on The Hill. Mechanical issues intervened later to spoil the fun.

A hat-trick of wins earned T&T’s Ronald Wortman (Honda Civic) the weekend’s Gp3 Champion Driver title, moving him from third to first in the points, while fellow-countrymen Marc Gill and Justin Sanguinette put their Gp2 Civics to good use, climbing to first and second in the standings. With the biggest grids of the weekend, Gp1 provided class entertainment, McCartney (Honda CRX) leading every lap, while T&T’s Aqeeb Ali (Civic) claimed a fourth and two third places to move ahead in the points.

On two wheels, British brothers Matt and Harry Truelove, plus Guyana’s Matthew Vieira, were the class of the field, aboard a trio of Yamaha R6s; from pole position, Matt claimed a hat-trick of wins, plus a new Bike lap record (61.542s), with Harry and Vieira second and third, ahead of local ace Terrance Ollivierre (Suzuki GSX-R600), back in action after dislocating his shoulder in a tumble at Bushy Park in March.

McCartney & Bynoe are 2018 BPMSI Champions

Devan McCartney is Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc’s (BPMSI) Champion Driver for 2018, with Kevin Bynoe claiming the Champion Rider crown. With six Group 1/Class 2 wins, including a hat-trick at the recent Williams Digicel International Race Meet, two seconds and a fourth place in BPMSI’s most popular and competitive class, McCartney (Honda CRX) amassed a total of 198 points. Newcomer Verdon Inniss (Toyota Starlet) finished second, not only in Gp1/C2, but also in the Champion Driver standings, with 132 points, while Ross Callender (Daihatsu Charmant), who won all three Gp1/C2 races in the July Night Races on the National Circuit, was third in class, fifth overall.

Having finished second in Gp1/C1 for the past two seasons, Darren Lashley moved up to Gp2/C2 for 2018 in the Honda Integra formerly campaigned by Windell Holmes; the only driver to score in all three rounds, Lashley’s total of 117 gave him the class win, also third overall. Junior Benskin (Nissan NX Coupe) claimed the Gp2/C1 title, his total of 114 points placing him fourth overall, while last year’s Champion Driver Andre Walcott (Suzuki Swift) finished sixth overall this year, retaining his Gp1/C1 crown.

The Hilti Handicap Championship for Cars was limited to two rounds, Shawn Eversley (Suzuki Swift) winning in March and Tyrone Martindale (Honda CRX) at the International. Eversley retired early in the September Handicap, which Martindale won, giving him a year-end total of 43 points and the title. Eversley (25pts) came second, Darren Lashley (21pts) third.

There were also only two rounds of the Superstock Championship, with Bynoe (Suzuki GSX-R600) the only rider to score points in both March and September, finishing second to Shirley Scantlebury (Suzuki GSX-R600) in the only race run at the season-opener. At the CMRC meet, Bynoe finished second to Terrance Ollivierre (Suzuki GSX-R600) among the BPMSI runners in all three races but, with reduced points awarded for the under-subscribed last race, Ollivierre ended the day with 68 points, one shy of Bynoe’s 69.

Our monthly update on other goings-on behind the scenes at Bushy Park Barbados:

• despite failing to make the final at the CIK FIA World Championship in Sweden last weekend, former Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Champion Zane Maloney emerged from the experience in positive mood: “In the motor sport, world we either win, or we learn, and this weekend was disappointing but also a learning experience and I’m extremely happy to have been given this opportunity. All thanks to my sponsors, Sol, Rock Hard Cement, Bushy Park Barbados, and Alpinestars! Thanks also goes out to my team at Ricky Flynn Motorsport, all of my supporters, family and friends!” After qualifying 45th out of a field of 102, he started 13th or 14th in the six heats, fighting through the field to claim second, third and fourth places against some of the world’s best OK karters; three DNFs, however, ruined his chances of making the final, based on points scored. He ends 2018 fourth place in the year-end standings of the CIK European Championship and third in the German Karting Championship (DKM), so our congrats on those achievements . . .

• congrats are also due to our own Michael Brathwaite, Senior Instructor at the Massy United Insurance Driving Standards Academy; he and his partner Karen welcomed baby boy Zyaire into their family earlier in the month. We all send our good wishes . . .
