RGHS Weekly Bulletin 28 September 2018

View this email in your browser

Dear RGHS Parents and learners

The term has flown by at a rate of knots. I really hope that everyone will find some time to put their feet up over the short break we have before the examination term arrives.  The arrival of so much rain over the past month has been a blessing for which I am sure we are all grateful.

During next term, we have the budget presentation on 30 October at 19:00 and I encourage as many of you to attend as possible as this is the opportunity to understand the vision of the school and SGB.

My thanks go to each of the members of staff who have laboured tirelessly to ensure that many academic, sporting, outreach and cultural activities have happened over this past term. Thank you also to each learner who has given of their time and talent to these events.

Please do take the time to read the other articles in this bulletin, as it is always good to see the immense offering of opportunities available at Rustenburg.

My congratulations go to the new prefects that were announced in assembly today.  These are the leaders chosen by a democratic vote and I am sure they will each step up to the challenge of being a good example and a confidant and supportive friend to their peers.

Michael Gates

Important Notices

2019 BUDGET MEETING
This will take place on Tuesday 30 October 2018 at 19:00 in the Thomson Hall at Rustenburg Girls' High School. A letter was emailed to all parents today and is also available on the Parent Portal under Documents.

WINTER/SUMMER UNIFORM CHANGEOVER
All learners must wear winter uniform for the first week of next term. Girls have the option to wear either winter or summer uniform from Monday 15 October to Friday 26 October. From Monday 29 October, however, it will be compulsory for all girls to wear the summer uniform.

Parents are advised to use the coming holiday to check that their daughters’ summer dresses still fit and that the hems are lengthened, where necessary. Please make new purchases timeously, as stock or certain sizes may not be readily available closer to the compulsory changeover date next term.

Water restrictions and sports kit
It was mentioned in a previous news bulletin that should the Level 6B water restrictions be relaxed, we will return to normal school uniform. The City of Cape Town has announced that the water restrictions will change from Level 6B to Level 5 from 1 October.

We have decided that, for a trial period, we will allow girls to continue to wear sports kit, however, we are limiting it to the following items only: RGHS tracksuit, RGHS blue or white golf shirt or warm up top, sports trainers and white socks.

Bug's Boutique will open again on Wednesday 10 October and will also be open on Saturday 13 October.

Thursday, 11 October
Owing to limited space in the Kemp Hall for the Awards Ceremony and Valedictory Service, the Grade 8s and 9s will not attend school on this day. This excludes Grade 8s and 9s with a sister in Grade 12, or those who are in the choir, orchestra, special music items or Jabulani, who will be attending both ceremonies. However, if it is not possible for parents to keep their Grade 8 or 9 daughter at home, we are happy for them to attend the ceremonies.

School will close for Grades 10 – 12 at 12:30.

Friday, 12 October
All Grade 12s are expected to be at school as normal until 10:30 for the meeting with Mr Gates in the Kemp Hall Gallery. They need to be in full school uniform.

The National Senior Certificate Examination instructions and regulations will be explained. Each candidate will have to sign for her personal examination package and to verify her attendance in accordance with the Education Department requirements. No learner can be excused from attending this meeting.

The Grade 9s listened to an insightful talk "Swimming with Crocodiles… and then what?" by Professor Leon Holtzhausen, father of Zoe, from the Department of Social Development at UCT. He spoke about the impact and relationship between music and drug abuse and highlighted the fact that drug referencing appears in many genres of music without listeners being aware of it. Professor Holtzhausen had very interesting research, statistics and insights into this multi-faceted topic.
