ROAD TO FREEDOM AND THE CIVIL WAR
While everyone featured in this exhibition has now gone, Ainslie’s powerful images memorialize the heroic people who passed through these places and tell important stories of the events that happened there.
Using his own self-designed and self-built cameras his imagery straddles the fine line between purely documentary and fine art, as they capture not only the sites themselves, but also fragments of their aura and a sense of the people whose energies occupied them.
n this exhibition, documentary pinhole photographer Tod Ainslie records sites associated with the Underground Railroad and the Civil War.  Ainslie’s distant family relationship through marriage to the famous abolitionist John Brown drew him to create the thirty-five black and white photographs featured in this exhibition.
