Press Forward is ready to end sexual harassment in the newsroom

Job scarcity, unpredictable hours, power imbalances on staff, deadline pressures. For decades now, the fast-paced, high-stress culture in newsrooms has created conditions in which abuse of power and sexual harassment may occur. But it’s only recently that the bad behavior is getting the attention it deserves.

Launched in March 2017 by current and former journalists, Press Forward is an independent nonprofit initiative whose mission is to eradicate sexual harassment, elevate women in the workplace and foster civil, equal and safe work environments. We talked to Press Forward about harassment in the workplace, why current training is ineffective, and what funders need to know about supporting this work.

WATCH: Our latest #SciComms webinar on reaching diverse audiences

Last week, we continued our series of funder conversations to connect grantmakers with research, strategy and practice in science communications with our latest webinar organized around two upcoming convenings:

SMASH (Science Media Awards & Summit in the Hub) and WGBH Innovation IdeaLab.

We invited speakers from these two science media conferences to discuss the question we’ve been exploring for over a year now: For funders who care about science and civic life, how do we reach new and diverse audiences with science content that sparks curiosity and learning?

Watch the webinar here and stay tuned for more details on upcoming #SciComms convenings.

  • Journalism funders are calling on newsrooms to respond to the 2018 Newsroom Employment Diversity Survey, conducted every year by the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE). So far, only 234 out of nearly 1,700 newspapers and digital media outlets have submitted data to this year’s survey.

  • The Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival & Symposium, now in its fourth year, has announced its film lineup. The festival is premiering 15 new films, including Watergate, the "definitive" account of the 1972 political scandal; Ghost Fleet, about a group of activists who risk their lives to find justice for the enslaved fishermen who feed the world's appetite for seafood; The Panama Papers, about the unprecedented coordination of more than 300 journalists who reveal the biggest global corruption scandal in history; and more. • Earlier this month, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism announced a $20 million fund to strengthen local journalism, particularly in metropolitan areas. The new fund aims to foster innovation in journalism, community engagement, technology and business models. The fund allows for other foundations to contribute and participate. Learn more.

What we know (and don't) about the impact of solutions-oriented reporting

In the past five years, solutions journalism has become a closely watched model in the field of journalism. As funders look to this model as a potential path to increase the impact of their programmatic work, many questions remain. What is solutions journalism? What exactly is its impact? And, how can foundations best support this type of journalism?
