HS Students Visit Visit Japan with CSIHS Teacher and Seattle YMCA
Last July, eight high school students from Seattle, Highline, Renton, and Shoreline districts visited Japan through an exchange program run by the Seattle YMCA – Kobe YMCA sister Y relationship. Joshua Hansell, Chief Sealth International High School Japanese teacher, and Roxana Pardo Garcia, community organizer, chaperoned the students. Upon arriving in Japan, they visited Hiroshima and studied the effects of its atomic bombing, and even talked with a survivor. Then they visited a Kobe Y Camp Yoshima on a tiny island in the Seto Inland Sea. Then they went to Kobe, stayed with host families, participated in Kobe Y preschool activities and visited Kyoto to view historical sites.

Deadlines Approaching Fast for Global Programs - Apply Now!
Global Visionaries
Are you interested in a cultural immersion trip to Guatemala? Would you like to participate in local and international service projects focused on social and environmental justice? If you answered yes, then Global Visionaries (GV) might be right for you. Global Visionaries has a long-standing partnership with Seattle Public Schools. Traveling to Guatemala is a transformative experience for the dozens of SPS students who participate in the program each year.
The deadline for the GV application is October 22.
One World Now!
One World Now! combines language and leadership instruction with study abroad. Students can take Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Korean classes after school twice a week and receive world language credit. A leadership class meets monthly on Saturdays. By fulfilling their commitment to the language and leadership classes, students will be eligible to travel abroad in the summer. OWN provides partial and full scholarships for summer travel. Applications are due on October 8. Apply on the OWN website.

National Security Language Initiative for Youth
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. Applications are due October 30.
Programs may take place in the following locations:
China, Estonia, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Korea, Latvia, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Turkey
U.S. Youth Ambassadors (USYA) Program
The U.S. Youth Ambassadors (USYA) Program is a 3-week leadership exchange abroad for U.S. teenagers ages 15-17 and adult mentors. The program provides full scholarships for 120 students and adult mentors to take part in one of five exchange programs to countries in South America and the Caribbean.
The program aims to develop a cadre of young adults in the United States who have a strong sense of civic responsibility, a commitment to their communities, an awareness of current and global issues, and strong interpersonal leadership skills. Participants will focus on program themes of civic education, leadership, and community service through the following activities: site meetings, experiential learning activities, leadership trainings, civic participation at the community level, mentoring by community, business, and NGO leaders, and volunteering. Additionally, participants will explore their host country via various subthemes such as social justice, environmental protection, entrepreneurship, multiculturalism, and civic activism.
Single and multi-country exchanges available for 2019: Argentina & Chile; Brazil; Dominican Republic; Ecuador; and Paraguay.The U.S. Youth Ambassadors application will be open until November 14, 2018. For any questions or inquires, email youthambassadors@worldlearning.org.

Funded Teacher Travel Opportunities
The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Teacher at Sea Program is to provide teachers hands-on, real-world research experience working at sea with world-renowned NOAA scientists, thereby giving them unique insight into oceanic and atmospheric research crucial to the nation. The program provides a unique opportunity for kindergarten through college-level teachers to sail aboard NOAA research ships to work under the tutelage of scientists and crew.

Youth Ambassadors Program (Adult Mentor)
The Youth Ambassadors Program is a 3-week leadership exchange abroad for U.S. teenagers ages 15-17 and adult mentors. The program provides full scholarships for 120 students and adult mentors to take part in one of five exchange programs to countries in the Caribbean and South America.
Adult mentors play many roles on the Youth Ambassadors program. As a participant, they will learn with the students, while also developing their youth mentorship skills. Being an adult mentor also entails handling problems that may arise, and communicating and working with local staff.
Adult mentors must have an intermediate level of Spanish for all exchanges, except to Brazil. Application due November 14th.
Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program
Selected educators will travel aboard the ships National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Endeavour II, and National Geographic Sea Lion on expeditions to regions including the Arctic, British and Irish Isles, Canadian Maritimes, Iceland, the Galapagos, Antarctica and more. While aboard, Fellows will share the importance of geographic literacy with fellow travelers, develop activities to bring back to their classrooms, and have an adventure of a lifetime. Prior to the expedition, all 2019 Grosvenor Teacher Fellows will travel to Washington, D.C. with all expenses covered to participate in a pre-voyage workshop sponsored by Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic.

Annual Skype-a-thon November 13-14
On November 13-14, nearly half a million students, teachers, and guest experts will connect via Skype to see how many virtual miles they can travel around the world in 48 hours.
The goal is to open hearts and minds by raising awareness of different cultures, values, and perspective, and to help support a quality education for thousands of student around the world.

Washington State Council for the Social Studies Fall Conference: October 13th at Lincoln High School (Tacoma)
This fall, meet with other Social Studies educators, future educators, university faculty, and staff at the Fall WSCSS Conference. Washington Association for Language Teaching Fall Conference: October 11-13 in Portland, OR
The WAFLT-COFLT Bi-State 2018 Fall Conference will be held on October 11th-13th, 2018, in Portland, OR at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion.

Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference: October 20 at Madison High School in Portland, OR
This year's NWTSJ conference is fast approaching - the 11th annual conference! Register now at nwtsj.org. Just $35 ($10 for students), which includes lunch.
This year’s keynote speaker is Winona LaDuke. LaDuke is an indefatigable activist, speaker, writer -- the executive director of Honor the Earth, an organization that raises awareness about Native environmental issues and develops resources for the survival of sustainable Native communities. Her NWTSJ keynote will be "Teaching Indigenous Rights: A Pathway to Social Justice."
This year's conference has more than 80 workshops. A sampling:

Save the date: March 22-23, 2019: 4th Annual Washington Global Issues Network Conference
In March 2015, Chief Sealth International High School hosted the inaugural Washington State Global Issues Network (WAGIN) Conference. See this West Seattle Blog article for some highlights. In 2016, Ingraham High School hosted the 2nd annual WAGIN Conference, also called the ACT Conference. In March 2017 Chief Sealth hosted a couple hundred middle and high school students for the 3rd annual WAGIN Conference. WAGIN is co-sponsored by the Global Issues Network (GIN), a nonprofit that supports global issues conferences in Latin America and Asia.
Youth from Chief Sealth International and Ingraham are collaborating to organize the 4th Annual WAGIN Conference, which will take place March 22-23, 2019 at Chief Sealth. Registration for middle and high school student teams will open in early November. More details will be included in the November edition of Global Talk.  Students who speak, read, and write a language other than English can earn world language credits in high school by demonstrating proficiency.

Essential Topics for Global Understanding: Health, Environment and Economics

Today’s students live in an increasingly globalized and interconnected world. To successfully learn, collaborate, and lead in the future, they need to understand and wrestle with topics of global significance. This online course offers an introduction to trans-regional issues that affect the lives and experiences of people living around the world. You will learn about globalization, the environment, and international health as well as the organizations and people who work together to find fair and sustainable solutions to today’s most pressing challenges. Using online resources and readings, scholar videos, and interactive discussion forums, you will collaborate to expand your thinking about global issues and to explore ways to integrate the study of global topics into your teaching. Course highlights include “Featured Teacher” ideas for K-12 classroom application, web 2.0 tool explorations, and weekly “web highlight” resources for classroom use.

Modern African History: Colonialism, Independence and Legacies
DATES: Oct. 31 - Dec. 4, 2018

This four-session online course will help you find new entry points in your curriculum for teaching about modern Africa and new strategies and resources to support your teaching. In a community of online learners you will advance your knowledge of African history in the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries, understanding the continent’s history not as a “single story” but a multifarious one. The course, as well, will emphasize Africa’s relationship to world historical developments. Course topics include European colonization, the multiple forms of African resistance to colonial control, the rise of independence movements and leaders, Africa’s experience of the Cold War, the political upheavals and economic crises of the late 20th century, and the hopes and challenges of the continent today. Each session will highlight a unique teaching strategy and explore exceptional web-based resources for the topic. Our course was co-developed with Boston University’s African Studies Center.
Especially for educators of grades 6-12.
