Project meeting: Cyprus
The project held a successful meeting in Cyprus in May, 2018. Led by project leader Professor Kevin Burden, members discussed a range of issues relating to the project’s scoping study, and made preparations for upcoming national multiplier events. A big thank-you to Eria Makridou and her colleagues from the Centre for the Advancement of Research & Development in Educational Technology (CARDET) for hosting the meeting.

Scoping Study
A preliminary version of the project’s scoping report is available from the DEIMP website. This report gives the findings from the first phase of the DEIMP project, drawing on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and a moderated Delphi study.
The SLR explored innovative mobile digital pedagogies in school education. At the conclusion of this process there were 57 papers (see list of references) selected as being suitable for inclusion in this SLR. A set of 21 pedagogical principles (see sample principles below) emerged from further analysis of these papers. These 21 principles, or variations of these, underpin the innovative and effective activities that were discussed in the m-learning literature.
The scoping study will inform the design and development of a multi-purpose mobile app that will support educators and pre-service teachers in designing and evaluating creative and innovative learning episodes for their students.
Sample principles (5 of 21) underpinning innovative smart mobile pedagogies emerging from SLR:
Digital play: Activity involves explorations without an explicit curriculum goal
Context-awareness: Activity adapts to environmental stimuli, for example new vocabulary is determined by external items
Customisation: Learning pathways are adapted to individual input
Intergenerational learning: Learners across different generations work together e.g. capturing an oral history
Authentic environment: Activity occurs in situ (that is it occurs in its original or natural location)
We are currently conducting an international survey with expert teachers and an international panel of experts (Delphi panel). The previously mentioned 21 principles have been embedded into a Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) survey for participants to consider their relative importance in the design of effective mobile pedagogical activities. This BWS activity is still open to primary and secondary teachers in our associate partnership schools across the project (approximately thirty schools) and elsewhere.

Conference presentations
DEIMP project development and ambitions were presented at the TISLID 2018 conference. On behalf of DEIMP, project member Ton Koenraad (TELLConsult) presented the paper ‘Selected models, strategies and resources developed in EU projects relevant for m-learning pedagogy development and training in Language Education’ at the TISLID18 Conference in Ghent, Belgium.

National Multiplier Events
Teachers met the UK team members in York on 14th September 2018. The group discussed what types of mobile technologies would be useful to colleagues in the classroom and how best the project team could develop the DEIMP app and MOOC to meet these needs. Read more about the event HERE
This is the first time the conference is being held in the southern hemisphere and will provide a wonderful opportunity for teachers, researchers and industry to celebrate the possibilities and explore the challenges of integrating innovative mobile technologies into learning institutions and into the broader field of education to promote best practice by educators and students. https://mite2019.uts.edu.au/
