B4C Sustainability Centre October Open Day This Saturday 6th October, 9am-12pm. B4C Sustainability Centre, Cnr Wright St & 1358 Old Cleveland Rd (entrance via Wright St), Carindale.
We'd love to see you here this Saturday morning at our monthly Open Day. Grab a cuppa from 9am and then enjoy a presentation at 9.30am. We'll update you on our projects and events and then you'll hear from our guest speaker. This month Dr Jennifer Firn will be talking about controlling invasive plants and why YOUR perspective on them matters. Jennifer is an Associate Professor at QUT's Science & Engineering Faculty. She is also Editor-in-Chief of the 'Ecology and Evolution' journal.
After the presentation enjoy some yummy morning tea (free for members, gold coin for others). And then have a tour of our nursery and gardens.
We'll have Boomerang Bags (including Christmas themed bags) for sale and our book swap happening (bring a book to swap with any book on the stand). There will also be natural honey for sale. Please bring your spare change, we don't have EFTPoS sorry.

FIELD TRIP: Karawatha Fauna Movement Wednesday 10th October. Departing city at 8.30am (secondary pick-up at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre). Come to a half day field trip and meet the hard-working members of Karawatha Forest Protection Society at Karawatha Discovery Centre, take in the beauty of Karawatha Forest and enjoy a guided walk over the Compton Road fauna overpass (not normally available to general public) - a behind-the-scenes look at the amazing work done to protect local wildlife!
Professor Darryl Jones will provide insights gained from many years of observation and research. He's been at the forefront of world-leading strategies to protect wildlife from road impacts. Cost: $20. Includes morning tea and transport. Register here >>
Common Myna Humane Reduction Workshop Thursday 18th October, 6pm B4C Sustainability Centre, cnr Wright St & Old Cleveland Rd, Carindale.
Free. Refreshments served. Bookings required. Learn how can you help control Common (Indian) Myna Bird impacts. This workshop, presented by Stefan Hattingh, will explain how to identify this bird (as well as the native Noisy Miner), their behaviour, how to report your sightings and how you can start trapping in your own backyard.

This workshop is part of a series being run by Brisbane Catchments Network thanks to a BCC Lord Mayor's Environment Grant. There will be more announced soon in other Brisbane regions.
We're delighted to have our 5-year partnership with the Port of Brisbane renewed. It's great news for the lower Brisbane River Corridor.
PoB CEO, Roy Cummins, said he looked forward to achieving more environmental outcomes with B4C.
“Over the past five years B4C has demonstrated a high level of commitment to catchment management at locations including Sandy Camp Road wetlands, Minnippi parklands, Colmslie Beach Reserve and the Port of Brisbane green buffer,” Roy said.
“The Port is deeply committed to the long-term sustainability of our local area and Moreton Bay. Having a partner like B4C helps us achieve those goals."
Priority projects will include Gibson Island, Lytton Buffer Corridor, Wynnum North and habitat management close to Port West and Port North.
B4C staff and volunteers joined with PoB at Minnippi this week to mark the occasion. We were also joined by other guests including Wynnum Manly Councillor Peter Cumming and team members from Pelican and Seabird Rescue Inc.

B4C President, Michael Petter, told the launch event guests that this partnership is an example of what great things can be achieved for the environment if people are willing to make it happen.
"It's a matter of will, it's not a matter of legislative impediments or practical impediments to it being done," Michael said.
"It's a matter of having the will to work together to achieve those common goals to protect the national infrastructure that we all need.
"Not only is the lower Brisbane River home to commerce, industry and cruise ship terminals, it's actually home to key natural assets in Brisbane and South East Queensland."
B4C Catchment Manager, Wayne Cameron, said the community will benefit greatly from the partnership.
"There is a need to protect and rehabilitate these areas of our city and thereby benefit from their ecosystem services, like water quality, natural landscapes, public amenity and habitat for wildlife," Wayne said.
"We now have a major project that will be seen and loved by the Brisbane community and our wildlife."
Some keen children (pictured) participated in the launch by planting a 5-year-old tree at Minnippi. It provided a wonderful symbol of what has been achieved so far as well as planning for a better future.

We're using everything from tea-towels and doona covers to surplus fabric from various creative projects. It's getting upcycled into bags, cutlery wraps, bunting and more. We're creating attractive, washable and reusable alternatives to plastic and stopping material from going into landfill. Check out the range when you're next here - such as at our next open day on Saturday 6th October (please bring spare change as we don't have EFTPoS).
