Autumn brings colour to our tree-lined streets, parks and gardens


Join us in October for a variety of neighbourhood explorations as we discover new parts of London's urban forest in the company of Paul Wood, acclaimed author of "London's Street Trees".

10.30am-12.30pm Sunday 7 October: Explore: Hackney Central Circular

Paul has created a new route through London's most forested borough - it's called Hackney Central Circular.  The variety of street trees to be found on this route cannot be matched anywhere else in London! Autumn colour is just beginning to show, so bring cameras, and get ready to be amazed by Hackney's urban forest.  Read more and book

10.30am-12.30pm Sunday 28 October: Explore: Brockley

Brockley is rightly the volunteer tree warden capital of south London, forging ahead by creating NGO Street Trees for Living. Not only does it have hundreds of tree enthusiasts but in conjunction with Lewisham Borough Council, it has encouraged residents right across the borough to take an interest in the trees planted in their streets. From exotic Persian Silk Trees outside Brockley station to mature London Planes on Wickham Road, the area is festooned with a rich variety of species. Read more and book

URBAN TREE TALK - local action 2.30pm-4.30pm Sunday 7 October The Place, Duke's Rd. London WC1H 9PY

You may well have read that street trees have been under threat in another English city.  Indeed, Sheffield residents have fought root and branch to save trees in their residential streets.  Now there's a chance for you to find out first hand form one of the campaign team about how residents came to the rescue, and how they've chosen to celebrate their success.  We are hosting an Urban Tree Talk from 2.30pm-4.30pm on Sunday 7 October at which Margaret Peart from Sheffield will be presenting.  She will be joined by local activists here in London, including Carly Hayes from TreeLogga to share experiences and to help us shape next year's Urban Tree Festival. APPLE DAY: Orchard to Orchard - with Carole Wright 10.30am-12.30pm Sunday 14 October Start: Peabody Sq, London SE1

A walk led by local SE1 resident Carole Wright, a community gardener and orchardist who manages the the three urban orchards which are nestled in biodiversity rich housing land. Discover award winning estate gardens, green roofs, listed buildings and social history.

Celebrating NATIONAL POETRY DAY - HIDDEN GARDEN HAIKU Thursday 4 October 12.30pm-2.00pm Start: Starbucks, Vauxhall SW8 1SP

Discover hidden gardens minutes from Vauxhall transport interchange in which you get to compose and recite haiku – 3 lined short poem usually associated with Japanese culture.

Novice or expert, join in this fun walking activity in which you get to compose, write and recite short 3 line poems (known as haiku) and see your work published in a ‘zine anthology. Be inspired by the beauty and calm of hidden gardens just minutes from the bustle of Vauxhall’s transport interchange.
