Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
28 September, 2018

As a staff, we have taken our theme “Setting Sail” and focused on four action steps to take as individuals that help encourage and enhance our community. These actions steps are organized in the form of an acronym for the word “Sail” with the first action being “stop the complaining.”

There are a number of personal and corporate reasons for us to try and lessen and stop our complaining. For the most part, as human beings, we tend to lean towards complaining. There are social reasons for this as nothing unites people faster than a common dislike. We can quickly feel included with others when we complain as that can create commonality between us. Complaining has also been shown to literally be contagious and acts similar to a virus. This results in an interesting statistic; the average person complains the equivalent of once a minute throughout the day.

The issue with complaining is that it is a downer for you and for those around you. For you personally, complaining has emotional, psychological, and even physical ramifications. Complaining has been shown to lower your immune system, increase your stress levels, and increase your blood pressure as well as other negative long-term impacts such as heart disease, diabetes, digestive issues, and weight gain. One of the articles I read for this post was actually titled “Complaining. Why it is literally killing you.” The unfortunate thing about complaining is that the more you do it, the easier it becomes. It literally re-wires your brain in such a way that complaining becomes easier and easier and more and more prevalent in your life. It’s a vicious cycle resulting in a downward spiral.

A question to ask is “If we never complain isn’t that unhealthy for us as well?” Yes and no. We do not want to create an environment where people feel they can never discuss issues of concern, frustrations, or needed improvements. There is, however, a difference between doing that and complaining and it simply lies in your personal motivation. The key here is your “why” or what is the purpose behind the “complaint”. Are you talking about it because you care about the person, you have genuine concern, or want to see improvements in them or the situation? Or is it for other reasons of personal gain.

Okay, so I understand that complaining has both negative effects on me personally as well as those around me, but what can I do about it? Here are a few strategies from the experts:
  • Add the word “but” to the end of your complaint. When you begin to hear yourself complain about something, end it with the word “but” and then add a positive statement. For example “I am sick and tired of my drive to work. . . . . but am thankful that I have a job that helps me provide for my family.”
  • Because complaining is contagious, separate or lessen your time around those who are chronic complainers.
  • Encourage a spirit of gratitude by taking a few seconds each day to make a statement regarding something you are grateful for.
  • When you start to complain, look for and ask the question “why?” When you see that your purpose for complaining is negative, challenge yourself to not say that complaint again.
  • Attempt a 24 hour challenge to not complain and see how you do.
As a community lets strive for things that build us up. Let’s “Set Sail” and do our best to stop the negative and destructive habit of complaining.

Have a great weekend,

Anchored in Excellence:
Annual Fund Starts on Monday!

월요일부터 연간 기금 모집을 시작합니다
坚持卓越:年度基金将在10月1日开始

From October 1 to November 21, Dalat families and staff come together in big and small ways to fund programs and equipment that enrich education for students far beyond what tuition pays for.

Involve your students in deciding how your family can help make this exciting work possible!
Encourage your kids to watch the big thermometers displayed on campus rise as the goal is reached, and explain why donating to projects in their own community is important. More information and a Promise Card is coming in the mail this week, plus you’ll see a special weekly email update about how the campaign is progressing.

Our 2018 goal is to raise RM195,000 for many projects and tools that help improve our school. Together, we can grow something extra special to benefit our students!

HS Drama Production
Murder Mystery

고등학생 드라마 제작 - 살인 추리극
高中年度歌舞剧
Murder, mayhem, and madness fill the stage for nearly two hours of exciting intrigue, plot twists, and a spectrum of quirky-to-conventional characters. The high school drama department presents its fall production, To Kill a Murderer: A Mystery in Three Acts, making its premier debut in Harbor Hall on Wednesday, October 17, at 6:30 p.m. with a special dinner theater option! The second (and final) performance on Thursday, October 18, begins at 7 p.m. (no dinner option). Tickets for both nights are RM10 and are available starting October 1 from the main office or from Mrs. Horton.

The Thursday-only dinner theater option is an add-on opportunity provided by our junior class with set meals starting at RM8; to browse your options or to place an order, click here: https://goo.gl/forms/u2F54K9uQPxR8b4a2.

Payment for all pre-ordered meals must be given to Mrs. Horton by 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16, or the order won't be placed. Prepaid dinners will be delivered to Harbor Hall at 6 p.m. for pre-show enjoyment. Dining patrons will be seated at tables near the stage, while drama-only patrons will enjoy traditional row seating in the tiered levels.

From Kids 4 Kids will sell baked goods before Thursday’s show and at intermission to raise money for local needs beyond our school community. What a delicious way to support this meaningful cause!

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing results for fall 2018 are now available on the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Dalat students in grades K–9 are assessed twice a year with MAP, a set of standardized tests.

Dalat uses standardized test data to observe how we rank in comparison to the United States’ national average as well as other international schools within our region. The data we use to compare our school with other international schools is taken from East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). EARCOS is an organization of 149 member schools of East Asia.

중학교 신입생들의 보고사항
新初中生的总结

It has been a month now and it's time to check in on the new students! The MS counselor will hold various lunch meetings in small groups to follow up on your child’s adjustment and transition into Dalat. This will be a chance for them to share how they are feeling, name any struggles and frustrations, and talk about what they look forward to in this season of their transition. We will discuss what happens emotionally, socially, and academically during a transition. If your child seeks out more support in any of these areas, you may be contacted to discuss further details.
