Dear friends and partners,
Over the first few weeks of school, I have met with nearly one thousand parents, school staff, and community members to discuss the progress we’re making in LA Unified—the launch of our Open Data portal, the funding of programs and facilities projects in our schools, new partnerships to benefit our students and schools, and more—as well as addressing questions about the ongoing labor negotiations and their impact on our families, something undoubtedly weighing on all of our minds.
These meetings are opening new lines of communication and continuing ongoing community conversations about the future of our public schools. But perhaps more importantly, they have reinforced my belief that when we abandon preconceived notions in favor of open and honest dialogue, we can all agree that we need a contract that gives teachers the support and resources they need to improve student achievement, gives parents a voice in their child’s education, and ensures a solid financial future for this district.
To that end, the District made public our offer to the teachers’ union ahead of the current mediation. It includes:
- a 6% raise for teachers,
- incentives for teachers to take courses in STEAM, dual-language, literacy intervention, and other areas that directly help boost student achievement,
- class size reductions in some of our highest needs schools, and
- a “plain language” version of the contract to empower parents and the public with a clear understanding of the decisions being made.
I look forward to continuing to meet with school communities and working together with our labor partners to reach an agreement that values their hard work and puts kids first.

In the first few weeks of school, we have held 22 meetings with parents and school communities at Palisades ES, Cheremoya, Gardner St, Palisades HS, Nestle Ave, Katherine Johnson STEM Academy, Hesby Oaks, Lanai Road, Kentwood, Marina Del Rey, Kenter Canyon, Encino ES, Wonderland, Mar Vista, Walgrove, Warner Ave, Marquez ES, Paul Revere, Broadway Ave, Serrania, Canyon, and Valley parents.
