"The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are"
Hello Wayfarers!
Welcome to the Society! If you want to become a member then please find us on the Guild's website.

We are running two events at the start of this term for non members. A hiking trip on the Clent Hills, Saturday 29th September, and a social on Sunday 30th September. The Clent Hills trip is a low lying easy walk but a great way to meet everyone in the society and have a fun day out of the city. You don't need to be a member for these, so come along! More info on these events is at the bottom of this email.

For all other trips we run you need to be a member. It's only £9 to join and with that you get discounts at Cotswolds and the ability to sign up to any walk! You can join us via the Guild website.
What are Sign-ups?

For all of our walks (other than our taster walk to the Clent Hills and social campus tour and picnic in the Vale) you have to sign-up to come along.
If we are travelling by train, you can sign up online.
However, for any other walk, you have to come along to one of our sign-up sessions.
The dates and times are released in our Wayfarers Weekly Newsletter and can be found at the top right.
Want to be a Walk Leader?

Walk Leaders lead our walks! Any member can be a walk leader. To be a walk leader we provide Walk Leader Training on 23rd-24th November!

You will gain useful skills in map reading, group leading and navigation! We need walk leaders on trips, therefore you have a greater chance of being on a trip. You also get an official certificate that you can use for evidence in job interviews.
Taster Walk: Clent Hills
29th September

Be a Wayfarer for the day on a walk to the Clent Hills! We'll meet at the Faraday statue (the big statue of the man in the chair) by the University Station at 9:45am. As this event is usually very popular, please buy an off-peak return train ticket from University to Hagley before the day.

The Clent hills are close to Birmingham, with the hill-tops giving excellent views of the city. This makes the walk the perfect choice for starting to explore the city, from a different angle! Clent hills was also the first Wayfarers destination back in 1933. It's perfect if you want to get some fresh air and see some greenery.

Come and say hello, meet new people, explore your new home and stretch your legs! (Let's just hope the weather holds out.)

What to bring:

  • Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes (that you don't mind getting muddy)
  • Lightweight trousers
  • Jumper and/or other layers
  • Waterproof coat and trousers
  • Packed lunch and water
  • Cash for emergencies
  • Rucksack to carry it all in
Taster Social: campus tour and picnic
30th September

Our first social of the year will be a walk around campus to show the beauty to the new students.
You might even learn a thing or too about the university! After that, we will be heading to the Vale to have a picnic so please bring food and drink for that.

Then we will head over to the Duck and Scholar for a few drinks as a group.

This will be a great way to meet other people in the society and get to know the people behind the Wayfarers a bit more. It will also give you a taste of the things that we do besides walking.

Please meet by Old Joe at 15:00!

Malvern Hills trip
6th October - Members only

Sign up: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/malvern-hills-tickets-50737273551

or come to our offline session on Thursday

The Malvern Hills are our destination for the first 'official' walk of the term! Once signed up for the trip, you will receive an email before the day with more information about meeting times, etc.

The Malverns are a regular stomping ground of the Wayfarers, being reasonably close to the University. However, they are definitely one of the best nearby hiking locations; described as "a mountain range in miniature". We will be taking our usual circular route of starting at Colwall station and going along the entire ridge -- with the trig point of Worcestershire Beacon being our goal. We will inevitably arrive at a local pub, and before travelling back to Uni.

We hope to see all Wayfarers, old and new, on the day.

What to bring:

  • Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes (that you don't mind getting muddy)

  • Lightweight trousers (definitely not jeans!)

  • Jumper and/or other layers

  • Waterproof coat and trousers

  • Packed lunch and water

  • Cash for emergencies

  • A rucksack to carry it all in
