Downtown Whigham modifications will ease entry onto US 84
Changes are coming to downtown Whigham that will make it easier for side street drivers entering US 84 to see oncoming traffic.
The proximity of parallel parking to the outside lanes of US 84 limits the view of side street drivers. To address the issue US 84 lanes will be narrowed from 12 feet to 11 feet and the buffer between parking and the outside travel lanes will be widened.
Contractor The Scruggs Co. will remove the top layer of asphalt and resurface and stripe US 84 from 150 feet west of Larkin Street to 150 feet east of Depot Street. Georgia Department of Transportation forces will handle signal detection and striping of crosswalks, stop bars, parking and hatching. Work is scheduled to begin Monday and will be done during daylight hours. It is expected to take about a week to complete. The start and completion dates are dependent upon weather and the contractor's schedule.
This is a Georgia DOT Quick Response Project. These projects typically cost less than $200,000 and can be completed in a short period of time. The cost of the Whigham project is $174,230.47. Funding for Quick Response Projects comes from the state motor fuel tax and is primarily used for operational improvements and safety and maintenance projects on the state route system. Though the projects are small in scale they can often have a big impact on travel and driver safety.
