Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapū o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

Welcome to term 4 - the term in which all the learning comes together! It is a term that traditionally races past in a flash - often filled with sports events and celebrations particularly for the older students!

We have warmly welcomed, this term, the following students and their whanau-

Leon, Room 6 and Clarence R4, Nikita R17, Pranav R4 and Prabhav R9, Trisha R3,  Meela and Josep R12, Ellen R12a, JIsu, Sadie, Edward, Japman and Macy-Jane R8a, Wiremu and Karipa R 13.

We farewell Marianna, Rooni, Sasen and Adam, and hope their learning journey continues to be rich and successful.

We are very lucky to continue to enrol families that will enrich our school community.

Tēna koutou, tēna koutou, tēna tatou katoa.

This week (as you will know) English medium classes are preparing for the Mask Parade to be held this Friday, and Māori medium students are preparing to perform  for the crowd after the parade.

This is a huge logistical event for our teachers so please ensure you sign your child in and out with your class teacher at the correct time. We take our responsibility to keep over five hundred children safe and returned to families promptly after the event - See below for details.

It will be an amazing event for your children to remember!

We are continuing to work behind the scenes to progress new classrooms. Many of you may have seen in the media that in addition to the two (almost)  in progress at present we will be getting another two classrooms to help with our ongoing roll growth.

I will talk more about this in another newsletter.

See you all Friday night at the parade.

Ngā mihi

Pip

Kowhai News
In Kowhai we are being SunSmart by wearing our hats or pōtae when we are outside, putting on sunscreen when the UV index is high and drinking plenty of water.
We have been using the SunSmart resources to help us learn how to be save. This video is one of our favourites  Just click on the image.
We have been making posters to share  this message of slip, slop, slap. seek and slide and will be sending them round to other classes in the school this week.

In Renwick 1 we are monitoring the amount of harmful Ultra Violet or UV rays that we are present each day and this helps us to know what precautions we need to take to be SunSmart. You can find out more about keeping safe in the sun at https://www.sunsmart.org.nz/.

Masked Parade
Tomorrow evening we are excited to be taking part in the Masked Parade, with our Weird and Wonderful theme of the 5 Senses.

We will be assembling at 4:45 at B5 in Montgomery Square car park (Briscoes car park) on Friday 26 October. Teachers will be there from 4.30 pm.

Children will be bringing their masks home from school on Friday afternoon and will need to bring these to the parade.

We ask that children wear black clothing.

Parents are to drop their children off with their class teacher who will sign them in, then collect their children in the same place after the parade. Each child will be signed out. Children are not to leave our assembly point without a parent or predetermined adult supervision. Please see your class teacher if you need to make arrangements.

Please note the following instructions for  Te Pouahi students.

This year, Te Pouahi are privileged to be invited to perform Kapahaka at the Masked Parade. The tamariki will be the entertainment before the final announcement. The details for the performance are as follows: Who: All tamariki in Te Pouahi (Yr 0-6)

If your child still has their apparel from Te Huinga Whetū, please ensure they return them by Wednesday. There will be no moko this year due to the time it will take to do over 100 tamariki. All tamariki will need to wear black bottoms (skirts/tights/shorts for girls - shorts/pants for boys) There will an opportunity for some of our emerging leaders to lead waiata and haka.

Pohutukawa News
On Monday morning Nelson Central School welcomed all the new students at a Mihi Whakatau.  It's great having you at our school - welcome!
On the first day back Rooms 9 and 12 visited the Suter Art Gallery to see the Ngā Hau Ngākau exhibition with paintings by Robin Slow, carvings by Brian Flintoff and music by Bob Bickerton.  We were engaged and inspired to create some wonderful artwork of our own.
Tōtara News
We are really winding into things for an exciting term in Tōtara. Last Friday we were fortunate to have Natalie from Resus Nelson come and teach us about CPR and what we can do to help someone if they have been seriously injured. It was great to practise on the dummies and race each other on the big screen.

This term we have many exciting opportunities coming up, including athletics, summit walk, Year 6 production, camps and end of year celebrations to look forward to.
Ngā Karere o Te Pouahi

Last Monday, as part of our mihi whakatau for our new students and kaiako, Tamariki Toa brought onto the school all of the trophies they had won at 'Te Huinga Whetū Kapa haka competitions held last term at Trafalgar Centre.  It was a special moment bringing on all the trophies and even more special sharing them with the rest of the school.  Tamariki Toa came first at the kapa haka competition and will be one of three groups that have qualified for Te Mana Kuratahi nationals being held in Waiakto in 2019.  Ka mau te wehi Tamariki Toa!!

Tehani participated at the 'Shakedown New Zealand Hip Hop Dance Champs'  which was held at Nelson College for Girls on Saturday 29th of September 2018.  Tehani received a silver medal as a member of the dance crew "Spilt Milk" in the junior crew division.  She also received a gold medal as a member of the "Born and Raised Crew" in the junior mega crews division.  What an exceptional effort Tehani!

Tehani dances with Ashley Belk of the Born&Raised Academy who train at Wairua Fitness, based in Elms street.  Well done Tehani on such a great success!  We are all so very proud of you.  Kei runga noa atu koe!!

Sports Updates
This week sees the remainder of term 4 summer sports competitions getting underway. We have a huge number of players in many sports. Unfortunatlely we now have very low numbers of sports shirts left to  issue and there are still a number not returned. Please return all unifroms not required for term 4 sports teams to the library by Friday please
Many thanks

Enviro Group

At the end of Term 3 Heather, the Enviroschools coordinator visited NCS and worked with a group of our enviro agents around the topic of Water as a resource. The children participated in some great activities that gave them an understanding of their own water usage and ways they can conserve water.  We had a great afternoon!

Can you spare some free time? Our Enviro group have some seedlings they have grown but the garden they are being planted into needs to be turned over. The children have done a great job weeding the area but it really needs some muscle power to be turned over properly. We will then add our OWN compost to the soil and then plant our seedlings. PLEASE let Lynley know if you can help. This can be done at any time of day! email lwalters@nelsoncentral.school.nz
