Welcome to the 4th newsletter of 2018, its the time of year we start expanding - metaphorically speaking, wanting to dedicate time to our health and fitness, with energy for summer.

I am amazed at how good we can feel from purely feeding ourselves healthy, nourishing and
nutritious food. Simple things like increasing vegetarian, plant based foods, adding daily greens, a handful of nuts, some plant protein i.e. avocado, beans or legumes and seeds. Some good fats i.e. olive oil, coconut oil, macadamia or pumpkin oil, and butter. Using whole grains over processed grains and reducing processed sugar, and of course drinking plenty of healthy water. Not so hard...

This part of the year is an opportunity to expand and deepen in our yoga. Throughout the year we need to recommit to our practice, which can sometimes feel challenging. But as the body and mind opens, we reap the benefits and we get to expand emotionally as well as physically.
I look forward to seeing some of you on the journey...

Yoga

So many students arrive to yoga with back pain. Regular practice of yoga helps with and can obliterate back pain when done consciously, with care and precision. Here is a beautiful and clear sequence that I have previously posted on Face Book and I wanted to share again. I recommend a daily practice, 20-30 minutes of the poses below that can be done easily and independently.

Health Matters

Home Remedies
We all have the ability to take control of our own health. This may vary depending on our health challenges but we absolutely have access to good health food that can fundamentally change the way we feel and our health issues.
Many may be surprised at how healing, common foods, that we use often can be. For example:

Garlic
A powerful antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral. Garlic is considered a natural antibiotic, considered to have the ability to fight virus strains.Traditional medicine has used to treat cold, flu, chest infections and fungal infections. Research has shown that garlic helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The garlic must be raw, as cooking reduces the health benefits. Add raw garlic to salad dressings, into hommus or pesto.

Turmeric
Has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to support digestion and the doshas. Much research has be done recently on its anti-inflammatory properties. Its also known for its anticancer and protection to the cardiovascular system. It can add to stir fries or a turmeric almond milk latte is delicious.

Ginger
Is a popular remedy for nausea, stimulates digestion and circulation. Research has shown that ginger assists the regulation of blood glucose. Add to a stir fry, lemon and ginger tea, curry, soup or fresh juice.

Lemon
Has high levels of Vitamin C, antioxidants, flavonoids and provide good immunity. Lemons also act as a digestive tonic balancing the blood's PH and alkalising the body. Drinking 1/2 a lemon in warm water when waking helps to alkalise the system, stimulate digestion and flush the liver. It can be added to salad dressings, squeezed into soups, or the rind can be added to cooking.

Coconut oil
Has antimicrobial properties and may help to reduce the risk of infection. It also helps to stabilise blood sugar, reduce cravings and support healthy weight. Coconut oil has a high heat threshold until oxidation. It can also be used as a healthy skin care alternative instead of products that contain harmful chemicals.

Manuka Honey
Has strong anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and when used topically helps heal wounds and burns. It is especially useful in containing and healing staph and strep infections. Its a great throat gargle with lemon.
Buddha Bowls
On my recent trips to Bali I loved all the Buddha bowls that Ubud offered. Totally healthy, yummy and super easy. A really great Spring meal or for in-between seasons and you can tailor it to suit your desires and tastes.
Usually
a Buddha bowl is made up of some of the ingredients below but definitely not limited to;
1) A grain i.e. brown, wild, black or white rice, quinoa, buckwheat or millet.
2) At least 3 vegetables, raw, roasted, steamed, stir fry etc.
3) Protein ie tofu, tempeh, beans, avocado, lentils, chickpeas, falafel etc.
4) Condiments ie fermented or pickled vegetables, olives, seeds, sprouts, seaweed etc.
5) Sauce ie tahini, satay, peanut sauce, miso sauce, mayonnaise etc

Rainbow Quinoa Buddha Bowl
  • 1 ½ cups tri coloured quinoa cooked
  • ½ a medium red capsicum, thinly sliced
  • 200 gr chickpeas from a can, washed and drained
  • 2 large handfuls of salad
  • 1 medium cucumber, thinly sliced
  • ½ avocado, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp sprouts of your choice
  • ½ tsp toasted sesame seeds
  • Satay or peanut dressing (this is my recipe - Haydie's,fry some garlic in coconut oil, add peanut butter, lemon, water, tamari and stir. Add more liquid until right consistency. Can add coconut sugar and chilli if desired)
