WEEKLY NOTES FROM THE WORKBENCH
#41 | 2018

The Oktoberfest craziness has left Munich. Thanks for that. Time to enjoy the last warm days in Bavaria.  Get a coffee. Enjoy the read.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee builds new decentralized web platform: Solid

If you are the guy who can say that you invented the internet, than I guess you also can say, that you will fix it. Sir Tim takes a break from MIT and focuses fulltime on the new decentralized open source web-platform Solid. Personally, I am super excited about it. Being myself an active developer on the platform Blockstack, that tries to do something similar, it's amazing to see that the area gets more and more attention. #ExcitingTimes

Calm Technology. Are you respecting the users time?

This is just a short article and checklist by Amber Case, but nevertheless a very important list, that not only designers should have in mind, but also the people that review and recommend products. These "calm" product features get not enough attention. I highly recommend Amber's book "Calm Technology" that goes much deeper into this topic.

The Origins of Money - Nick Szabo

Nick Szabo has so many great papers... many written ages ago. This one is from 2002. Yes, it's a super nerdy read, but fascinating. The construct of money. We might be in the middle of a phase where we change our definition of it again. Great to learn more about the basic concept and history of it.

How about building a website together? Designer+Developer workflow.

Dan Mall and Brad Frost, two well known and super talented front-end designers out there, take the time to make a two hour long video talking about the optimal workflow between designers and front-end engineers. Highly recommended.

Colorbox

This is the coolest color tool of the year. *mic drop*.

The Messy Middle - Scott Belsky

There is an important time while building a startup that not many people are talking or writing about. The time after the first months of honey moon phase (the phase after your last funding round, or after your first launch of the product) is over. The time when your first hypothesis about your product seem to be wrong, when people start feeling less optimistic. The messy middle. The most underrated phase while building a company. Scott Belsky wrote a book about how to make it through without messing it up.

CSS Grid - Now in Webflow

Still a big fan of Webflow, even in times of Framer X ;) - The fastest and most enjoyable way for designers to produce some simple front-end code. This week a huge feature release for the Webflow guys: Now with CSS Grid Support. The graphic designer in you gets excited! Right?

Without Fail.

Gimlet's Alex Blumberg has a new show.  Without Fail. Candid conversations with people who have done hard things: what worked, what didn't and why. The first episode with Andrew Mason founder and former CEO of Groupon. Bunch of not well known and interesting stories about the beginning of the company.

Naval Ravikant's Periscope Sessions

So let's say first that following a Guru or being a huge fanboy is not really my cup of tea, though I generally listen to what Naval Ravikant has to say. Super smart guy and one of the most down to earth guys in Silicon Valley. He is joining a new kind of "media format" that is a mixture of podcast and "real fireside chat". These Periscope session's by Naval have a very personal setting...  it feels much more like a real dinner conversation. Very interesting format that would be great to see from more people.

Olafur Eliasson - The way we see the world is relative

“We mistakenly take our way of perceiving the world for granted as being natural. The way we see things, the way we engage things – it’s not natural, it’s cultural”.  Olafur Eliasson an agent of change through art. Great guy.

That’s it for this week. Stay as you are. Sleep well.

And yes, as always: If you found anything interesting here, please feel free to share 🚀.
