Greetings from the Director

We're almost to midterms!

Now is a good time for the Library and Learning Resources (LLR) to check on our effectiveness in serving the College and the broader community. Every two years, we conduct a survey that allows us to hear how our resources and services have impacted you. The Library survey will begin October 29 and end November 9. The Learning Resources Tutoring and Writing Centers, Marlboro Learning Lab, and the Math Learning Center's comprehensive surveys will be conducted in the spring.

In addition, the Library is featuring some fantastic events this month. Please stop by the Library to attend or meet us as we move about on campus conducting the survey. Share your thoughts and a treat.

Archive Collection

Black Panther Display (October 2018)

Just in case you haven't noticed, the displays have hijacked the archives page! We've got an array of displays here at the Library. Many of them rotate on a monthly basis, so you should visit at least once a month to see what's featured.

Enjoy these photos, and don't forget to send in your favorite photos to include in the Archive.

Once it’s up and running, use the Archives to:

Conduct research for assignment, papers, and projects
Learn more about the history of the college.
Learn more about individuals associated with the college

The best part about the Digital Archive Collection is that you can participate!

Checking In: LLR Staff

If you’ve ever wondered how all the books at the Library were acquired and organized, look no further than the next staff member in the LLR division, Mrs. Lori LaFontaine. Lori is also in charge of fulfilling all the orders for the college’s Interlibrary Loan (ILL) program.

Bookends: Tell us a little about yourself.

LL: I started in 1994 processing books in the Library as a Library Media Technician. Then I became Acquisitions Supervisor, which is also responsible for Interlibrary Loan.

B: When did you know you wanted to work in a library?/What made you want to work in a library?

LL: When I got the job. I have loved it and been here ever since. Finding out that my grandmother was a cataloger at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the 70s, working at a library was in my blood.

B: What’s your favorite part of working in a library?

LL: The quiet. Also, helping students and faculty find articles and books in our collection or via Interlibrary loan.

B: What are you currently reading?

LL: I’m rereading the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It’s a book we had a chance to read through a training session.

B: What is your favorite book of all time?

LL: The Help [Kathryn Stockett] and Twilight [Stephenie Meyer]. I also really enjoyed the movies.

Library Happenings

Want to know what’s going on at the library this season? For October, Bookends is proud to showcase two of our favorite events hosted by the Library.

What: Edible Book Contest
When: Tuesday, October 30, 3:30 pm-5:00 pm
Where: Culinary Arts Center, Foyer

More: A community-wide competition that showcases food that is shaped like, or refers to, books. Come view, sample, and vote for your favorite edible literary-themed concoctions- raw or baked, sweet or savory. Contestants can win up to $150! For details see the contest guidelines.

What: Black Panther
When: Wednesday, October 31, 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Where: Accokeek Hall, Room 221
More: Celebrate Halloween with a screening of Black Panther! Popcorn, candy, and other refreshments will be provided. Don’t forget to dress up, as prizes will be awarded for best costume. For more details, visit our Screenings Guide.

Sunday: Closed

Please note, all library services close 15 minutes before the building closes.

The More You Know:
Collaborative Workstations

Coming soon to a Library near you (hint, hint: it's us): collaboration stations! If you've been to the computer lab in the CAT building, you've seen these stations in action.

Students who have visual projects can gather together at these stations to see, hear, and manipulate images on screen. These workstations are for 3-4 students and will have headphone jacks available. In the Library, students must present a valid student identification card to unlock the station.
