Welcome to The Bone Blog!

Hi Friends:Jackson Orthopedic Foundation

An excellent anniversary celebration! Jackson Orthopedic Foundation’s 20th Anniversary & Inaugural Canes Film Festival on November 4 in downtown Oakland was wonderful! Thank you to everyone who joined us and all who wished us a “happy anniversary.” Read about our celebration and see photos of the special evening on our website. And remember, you can contribute to the work of JOF at any time—and tomorrow especially, as it’s Giving Tuesday.

Announcing the JOF Karin S. Selbach Fund: Our new education fund, established this month with a founding contribution by Jerrald R. Goldman, MD, honors the memory of pioneering nurse Karin Selbach (1952-2018). The fund will target programs that strive to improve the lives of people with musculoskeletal conditions through education, and will offer scholarships to JOF orthopedic care programs and skills workshops. Read about the remarkable Karin Selbach, and consider making a donation to this new fund.

We've been busy! In addition to our benefit event early this month, we've been sharing our expertise with colleagues at several skills workshops. With the able assistance of Laura Balassone, NP, JOF’s Kathy Geier and AJ Benham offered a successful Orthopedic Injection Workshop on October 27 for 18 primary care providers at Holy Names University in Oakland. On November 10, Kathy Geier and Briana Felix, ERT, held a Casting/Splinting Workshop for 14 Webster Orthopedics employees in San Ramon. These workshops are valuable to participants seeking to improve their orthopedic skills, offer 6.5 continuing education units, and inform medical providers about the importance of proper musculoskeletal care.

JOF Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Inaugural Canes Film Festival

An enthusiastic crowd gathered at 1544 Broadway in downtown Oakland on Sunday afternoon, November 4, to learn about JOF’s mission, raise a celebratory glass, and watch entertaining short films about orthopedic health. Our 20th Anniversary & Inaugural Canes Film Festival benefit was everything we could have hoped for in our first year as a healthcare film festival producer. We are making plans to ensure that next year's event will be even bigger, so stay tuned for details. You won’t want to miss it!

Take a look at the fun photos captured by Amy Sullivan of our special event.

JOF Medical Director Peter Slabaugh, MD, emceed the fun event, recalling JOF’s education and outreach work in addition to events that occurred in 1998 other than our organization’s beginnings. Keynoter Kevin Roth, MD, of Webster Orthopedics, a JOF intern in 1999, shared what a great intern experience can mean to a young person and the value of a mentor, in his case, Mac Reynolds, MD, a co-founder of JOF. Kathy Geier discussed JOF’s Summer Intern Program and AJ Benham talked about the Orthopedic Primary Care course, Injections Workshops and other JOF skill-building offerings.

Last but not least, four film shorts, the 2018 Summer Interns’ final projects, were screened. These included:
•    Musculoskeletal Conditions, by Amaris Durst and Qihua Sun (receiving the audience award for Best Film of 2018);
•    Office Habits: 5 Do’s & 4 Don’ts, by Bradley Filgas (Best Ergonomics Film);
•    Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, by Amy Wang and Ty’Jah Banks (Best Upper Extremity Condition Film); and
•    Muscular Imbalance, by Kenneth Zhou (Best Comic Presentation of a Musculoskeletal Condition).

All the films were a big hit and were accompanied by video clips of the interns discussing what the Summer Intern Program had meant to them.

Special thanks to sponsors, donors and volunteers, including Jerrald R. Goldman, MD, for his $15,000 donation establishing the Karin S. Selbach Fund, and to Laurel Wreath Sponsors, AJ Benham, Kathleen A. Geier, Catherine Matthews, McKesson Medical Surgical, Social Change Consulting and Peter Slabaugh, MD.

JOF also thanks Annemarie Henning and Social Change Consulting for the 20th Anniversary & Inaugural Canes Film Festival logo, provided as a pro bono contribution to this event.

See you at next year's Canes Film Festival!
