Webinar mini-series on medical evaluation

Medical evaluation – key criteria for the Barnahus and similar setups

Mini-series starts today!

18 October, 25 October, and 19 November
Register here.

One criterion of the Barnahus is that a medical evaluation is carried out to ensure a victim’s right to health and to secure forensic evidence for investigative purposes. As part of its medical services, a Barnahus or similar setup should also provide treatment and referrals to specialists as integral parts of its service.

This 3-part webinar mini-series will explore the many considerations for meeting the medical evaluation criteria for Barnahus:

Part 1: Framework for medical standards
Featuring Stefan Rune, Consultant paediatrician at Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden
Today! 18 October 2018 15:00 CEST

Part 2: Physical abuse diagnostic workup and decision-making
Featuring Resmiye Oral, Professor of Paediatrics, Director of the Child Protection Program at the University of Iowa, USA
25 October 2018 15:00 CEST

Part 3: Sexual abuse diagnostic workup and decision-making
Featuring Andrea Goddard, Consultant paediatrician, Imperial College Healthcare, NHS Trust, UK
19 November 2018 15:00 CEST

This mini-series is targeted to all professionals who are working to meet the Barnahus Quality Standards, or to otherwise ensure reliable evidence and good outcomes for children who are victims and witnesses of violence. Join to learn about:
  • Why medical evaluation is important for the wellbeing of children and the investigation,
  • best practices for a multi-disciplinary cooperation which includes medical evaluation,
  • the types of medical providers who should be available to the Barnahus and the additional training they may need,
  • what a child-friendly exam room may look like,
  • the process when a medical problem is detected that would otherwise would have gone unnoticed,
  • ensuring treatment and follow-up.
The PROMISE Webinar Series is co-organised with Terre des Hommes, a partner of this project, as part of the ChildHub's child protection webinar series.

About PROMISE
PROMISE supports the establishment of Barnahus and child-friendly institutions, notably by sharing good practices and high-quality standards for a European approach. The Barnahus model refers to multi-disciplinary and interagency interventions organized in a child-friendly setting. This work aims at a Europe where the human rights of children to protection from violence, support and to be heard are fulfilled. To this end, child victims and witnesses of violence in Europe are protected by child-friendly interventions and rapid access to justice and care.

The European Barnahus Movement was launched in June 2017. The launch confirmed Barnahus as a good practice, validated the Barnahus model as a widely accepted concept and consolidated the European network of Barnahus staff and interested government officials and practitioners.

PROMISE 2 (2017-2019) is promoting progress at national level in several European countries, and builds on learning from the first PROMISE project (2015-2017), which supported government officials and practitioners from more than 11 countries to establish Barnahus or similar institutions. Find out more at www.childrenatrisk.eu/promise

PROMISE resources are available for officials and practitioners who have an interest in establishing and operating Barnahus. The Vision of the project promotes common principles, criteria, goals and challenges. The Barnahus Quality Standards offer ground-breaking guidance and constitute the first attempt to define the principles and good practice standards for services that want to operate according to the Barnahus model. The Standards are currently being translated into several European languages. All versions will be published on the Promise website. The Enabling Child-Sensitive Justice report gives an overview of how the Barnahus model has emerged and gradually expanded in Europe, while the Compendium of Law and  Guidance provides a comprehensive review of international and European law and authoritative guidance concerning the rights of child victims and witnesses. Promoting Progress on Barnahus in Europe guides the development of national and regional advocacy strategies.

The PROMISE Webinar Series is co-organised with Terre des Hommes, a partner of PROMISE 2, as part of the ChildHub's child protection webinar series.
