After Record-Breaking Summer of Drowning Tragedies, GLWSC & GLBA Members Gathering in Cleveland to Find Solutions – Everyone Welcome

Human Chains and Toxic Algal Blooms Drive Focus on Water Safety and Water Quality

Water safety experts and advocates are gathering in Cleveland after a record 102 Great Lakes drownings so far in 2018. According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, about 725 people have drowned since tracking began in 2010. All of them were preventable.

“After a summer where we saw human chains desperately searching for drowning victims in Lake Michigan, we are gathering experts from around the Great Lakes to develop a better course of action,” said Jamie Racklyeft, Executive Director of the Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium.

“We know that education and training, beach warning signs and systems, loaner lifejacket and rescue equipment, lifeguards, and swimming lessons all help, but we need innovative ways to reach more people and help them safely enjoy the big lakes.”

The 2018 Great Lakes Beach & Water Safety Conference will be held in Cleveland, October 23-25 at the Doubletree Hotel – Independence. Scientists, coastal planners, meteorologists, first responders, community health officials, resource managers, government officials, students, interest groups, survivors, and more are expected to attend the three-day event, with concurrent tracks focusing on water safety and water quality. Attendees can pick and choose between tracks and individual sessions.

Themed “Keeping it Clean & Safe in Cleveland,” the event is hosted jointly by the Great Lakes Beach Association and the Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium, and sponsored by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.

Read more about the event from our news release here.

Consortium-Approved Universal Beach Warning Signage Reprints Underway
Every Beach Needs These Signs to Help Keep Visitors Safer

We are almost out of our first run of our universal beach warning signage, so if you order now, you'll be among the first to receive our next batch and still have plenty of time to install them before next year's busy season.

By having consistency around the Great Lakes, people will notice and trust the warnings. The new signs also feature QR codes that take smart phone users to current beach conditions from the National Weather Service.

With subsidies from the GLWSC and our generous donors, the new universal signs cost only $10 each + shipping.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation
A Message from Jamie Racklyeft

Some of you might remember how 2012 was "my country song year," because my dog done died, I dang near drowned, and my woman done left me. Six years later, 2018 was a year of second chances – at life and at love.

Last year, I ran into a friend and colleague at the University of Michigan. We had worked together at Borders and Waldenbooks back in the day, and as we were catching up, I mentioned my country song year and she thought that would make a great employee spotlight story.

Nothing came of it until this summer when Michigan Creative interviewed me, recorded me giving a keynote talk for meteorologists, and talked to Consortium members Rhett Register from Michigan Sea Grant and Bob Dukesherer from the National Weather Service. Well, when U-M posts a video on their social media channels, it gets seen. In fact, between the various versions they produced, they have had about 100K views to date.

And these all hit about a week before my wedding. In fact, on the drive up north, I did three phone interviews, and had a photographer waiting on the beach when we arrived. Waking up on my wedding day and finding a copy of the Detroit News with Susie and me on the cover was pretty amazing. Several other interviews aired and were printed or posted soon after, including my favorite from WDIV-TV News, which included some of our very happy wedding pictures.

The point for you, as a member of this great organization, is that we should take any and all opportunities to get our lifesaving water safety messages out to the public via the media. Most survivors and victims' families say they simply didn't know about the dangers in the Great Lakes.

Say yes to interviews, or direct them to me and other leaders if you aren't yet comfortable, or we can coach you so you are ready when opportunities arise.

Thank you for all you do, and I hope to see you in Cleveland or talk to you in an Action Committee meeting to #EndDrowning soon.

All best,

Jamie
