Tauranga Boys' College Newsletter

Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

I hope your sons are enjoying a well deserved holiday break after a busy Term 3, the end of the winter sports season, a busy cultural programme and senior assessments.  As in previous years, our sports teams represented the College with distinction both on and off the field.  I had the pleasure of supporting a number of our teams during Winter Tournament Week.  I enjoyed watching our Football 1st XI play some of the best football I have seen from the team at the NZSS Championships in Christchurch where they eventually finished in a very creditable 6th place.  Back in Tauranga I was able to watch our Hockey 1st XI compete in the Rankin Cup, the premier secondary school hockey tournament, and then our Junior Football Teams compete in the Hillsdene Tournament, well organised by our Teacher in Charge of Football, Mr Scott Furness.  The three teams played well, with the Junior A Team eventually finishing 3rd.  All reports are that our boys represented the College with pride and determination, upholding the proud sporting reputation of the College.

I am very appreciative of the contribution and time our teachers make to support our boys in co-curricular activities and also thank parents and others who support our boys to give them a vast array of sporting opportunities and represent the College in competition either regionally throughout the season or nationally at Winter Tournament.  I know a significant part of your son's growth and development whilst at College is due to his involvement in the many co-curricular activities provided at the College.  He will have benefited from this and further developed qualities of a good man through his involvement.

Whilst this character development is very important, our key focus is on maximising the level of academic achievement of your son.  During the last two weeks of term, senior boys, Years 11, 12 and 13, were involved in assessments, primarily trial assessments related to NCEA externals they will sit beginning Wednesday 7th November.  Your son will have received feedback from his teachers after the assessments were marked and guidance on areas he needs to focus on to be well prepared for the NCEA Externals.  With only 15 school days remaining once your son returns in Term 4, I would recommend study is undertaken over the remaining week of the holidays.

Junior students will have exams in week 6 of the term, that will measure progress and attainment throughout the year.  Again, I would ask parents to encourage their sons to familiarise with the material that has been covered to date in class to maximise their opportunities to realise their academic potential.

Term 4 is another busy term, with a number of events being held to acknowledge achievement throughout the year.

60th Jubilee

Labour Weekend

For the College, a very significant event occurs at Labour Weekend, where we celebrate 60 years of boys' education.  We have been very fortunate to have our Old Boys' of the Decade, Peter Burling and Kane Williamson, attending our Gala Dinner, two of New Zealand's premier sportsmen of the last 10 years whom we can call our own and acknowledge their significant achievements.  I would encourage you to visit our website and join us to celebrate our 60th Jubilee as time is running out to be part of this celebration.

We are encouraging everyone to definitely come along to the Powhiri / Welcome, as this is where we will be taking the group photos, so please tick that box when you register! (Complimentary Morning tea supplied).

FOODBANK

A very big thank you to parents and boys for the very generous contributions to our Foodbank Appeal.  Once again Foodbank Tauranga  was overwhelmed by the generosity of the Tauranga Boys' College Community.  Thank you!

CONGRATULATIONS to you all for being a part of another heartening effort for Foodbank this year. A record breaking 8184 items to Foodbank, our best effort for a number of years - 363 soaps, 133 bottles of shampoo, 626 tubes of toothpaste, 3601 toothbrushes, 684 razors, 167 cans of shaving foam, 241 deodorants. These were all funded with the monies collected by form classes. In addition to this, boxes and boxes of staple goods, cans, cereals etc were donated.
