Hello Ann Arbor Jaycees,

This is a special edition of The Crier. This time every year we look to the future of our Chapter and decide who is going to lead us to that future.

The election committee consisting of Emily Bush, Melissa Knitter, and I would like to present this year's slate of candidates for your consideration for the 2019 Board of Directors.

Each candidate has submitted a little something about themselves and their vision of their part on the Board. They have each gained great experiences about event coordination, leadership, and personal growth through the Ann Arbor Jaycees, now they would like to give back to it.

In the past, our very own Board members have gone on to serve at the state, national, and international levels.

On a more personal level, I served on the Board first as Treasurer, then Vice President of Social Affairs, then President. These years have helped me grow as a planner and a leader.  As a matter of fact, being on the Board of Directors as well as running several projects for the Jaycees has led me to my current job as Event Coordinator for the University of Michigan Department of Economics.  I apply what I've learned in the Jaycees every day in this position.

On November 1 at the Membership Meeting, come to support these candidates as they venture on to this next great adventure in their lives. Each of them will take a few minutes to talk to you all and explain what they plan to do in 2019.

In Jaycees,

Michael Lee, Chairperson of the Board
Elections will be held at the November Monthly Membership Meeting on

Thursday, November 1, 2018
Presidential Candidate
Carena Townsend

I am honored and excited to be nominated to be the next President of the Ann Arbor Jaycees.

Many of you know me as the outgoing Membership VP that you see today, but that is not how my tenure started with the chapter. In late 2010, I moved back to Ann Arbor and was in search of a way to meet new people and get back involved in the community. I was
lucky enough to attend a new member info session where I met Fay and Mary Jo. Although it took me at least 6 months to officially join, I’m beyond thankful that Fay never stopped emailing me to come to any and every project. Although I was interested, I was shy and overwhelmed.

When I saw an email about joining a committee to plan the 2012 Spring Eggstravagazna, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to meet a smaller group of members and get involved. I was immediately hooked and jumped in to be in charge of the Bike Decorating Contest for the Fourth of July Parade. I couldn’t wait to get more involved and joined the 2013 Board of Directors as a Director under Community. As much as I loved creating community projects, I knew that my strengths lied in recruiting. I was recruiting for my job and I must’ve been doing something right or the University of Michigan wouldn’t have sent a Spartan in Wolverine clothing to Buckeye territory unless it was some joke. :) Regardless, I found myself becoming confident in my ability to make meaningful connections and building relationships with new people and loved sharing what the Jaycees were doing along the way, which led me to be the 2014 Membership Vice President.

Although I loved my involvement in the chapter, in 2015 I decided to make a change and applied to pursue my dreaming of living abroad and moved to Prague, Czech Republic. Although I was 4,389 miles away, I still remained active and attended as many as events as I could when I was home visiting. The community that the Jaycees has provided me over the past seven years is something that I missed dearly and pushed me to serve again as the 2018 Membership VP after moving back.

I’ve enjoyed seeing the chapter change over the past few years. It’s exciting to be part a chapter of many new members who are eager to learn, impact the community and make change in the world. I love the passion that everyone brings to planning projects, which is why I want to focus on members and community during my presidential year.

For 2019, I first want to focus on you, the membership. Our chapter is fortunate in having so many new members, which means so many new ideas. I believe that by having active and happy members, we can create incredible new projects and reinvigorating older ones. I want to hear your ideas, I want to help you make them a reality. New projects and happy members will result in people wanting to join us and see what amazing things we are doing, but this will also mean you are getting the most out of your Jaycee experience.

The second thing I want to focus on is our impact on the community. We have the resources and manpower to host events like the Parade and Zombie Zap. I want to see the chapter partnering with more organizations whether it’s through volunteering to organize donations at the Foster Care Closet, bowling and sponsoring a lane for Trails Edge Camp, creating supply boxes for kids at the Ozone House or serving pizza to the homeless at Liberty Plaza. Let’s see how far our reach can go in supporting our community.

I’ve benefited in so many ways from being a part of this organization. From making great friendship, gaining leadership skills, to becoming confident in my recruitment ability and seeing the impact we have on the community and I even got to dress up like a taco along the way.  In order for us to accomplish the goals of community outreach, I think of Gandhi’s quote “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” In 2019, we are going to create our new opportunities for growth, community impact and fun.  Let’s “Be the Change” we wish to see in our chapter, our community and the world.

Operations Vice President Candidate
Sean Mueller
Hello Ann Arbor Jaycees,

It is with great pleasure that I am accepting my nomination for Vice President of Operations. I moved to Ann Arbor earlier this year and the Jaycees was the first organization that I joined in an attempt to meet new people and make new friends. Fortunately, this happened quickly, thanks to the inviting nature of this group. Even in my short time, I’ve grown personally and professionally, built strong relationships, volunteered in the community, and helped the

chapter/chapter members with several events. I can already see that it’s an organization that has a great opportunity to consistently make an impact on our members and the Ann Arbor community. However, none of that impact happens without the fundraising efforts of operations. I’m excited about the opportunity to drive those efforts. Finance and fundraising have been the cornerstone of most leadership positions that I’ve held in other organizations. I believe that my previous experiences and skills can not only bring new and innovative ideas to the table, but will allow me to effectively execute key events of the chapter like Carnival.

In my office, you will find a large print out of the quote “How could somebody not give 100%, when it's 100% their choice.” I have every intention to put 100% effort into this position to help this chapter continue to make an impact on our members and the local community. Thank you for the time and your consideration.

Community Vice President Candidate
Michael Schultz

Greetings fellow Ann Arbor Jaycees. I am thrilled to accept the nomination for Vice President of Community. I have been a member of the Ann Arbor Jaycees since March 2016, and am presently serving as one of the chapter's two directors.

When I moved back to the Ann Arbor area, I almost immediately began looking for an organization, as I have often termed it, similar to the Boy Scout troop I was in from middle school
through high school - an organization through which I would be able to establish friendships, and to serve the community. What sets the Jaycees apart from other groups I found is the extent to which it enables and encourages community involvement and community service; that it provides the tools and support for any member to propose and pursue any project, any endeavor. While not a service organization, this facet is why I joined. Where service organizations are most often dedicated to one single cause, that the Jaycees is a leadership development organization has meant I have been exposed to far more opportunities and causes than I ever would have found on my own. That community involvement, that support for passion for positive change is what I value most in this organization. A matter of fundamental, personal belief: The world we have is the world we have created, the world we have chosen ("we" in the broadest sense, as "humanity," our choices and actions as a collective, as a species). If granted the opportunity to serve as your Vice President of Community in 2019, I guarantee I will provide the assistance and support you require to see through your ideas for how we can serve our community. To borrow a familiar phrase - service to humanity is the best work of life.

Thank you,

Michael Schultz
Candidate for 2019 Vice President of Community
Social Affairs Vice President Candidate
Kelly O'Leary

Hello Ann Arbor Jaycees!

I am Kelly O’Leary and I am very excited to be nominated for the Vice President of Social Affairs.  It has been a great opportunity to work with all of you on different projects this past year.  The July 4th parade was a highlight of my first summer in Ann Arbor.

Throughout my life, volunteering and community involvement have always been passions for me.  In college, I was part of many studentcommunity
involvement boards. Then, in my early professional career, I served as a board member for the Irish Network New Orleans and Hearts & Hands Disaster Recovery.  Being part of the Ann Arbor Jaycees, even for just the past year, has allowed me to build relationships both personally and professionally.  I look forward to continuing those relationships and building new ones as your VP of Social Affairs.

As an organization, we are in a unique position in our community.  We have the ability to reach out and help an age group that, at times, can feel adrift.  Let’s get out there to build people up and HAVE FUN!
Absentee ballots will be available upon request 10 days prior to the election (Monday, October 22).  Completed ballots must be received on or before the day of the election.  Absentee ballots can be requested and returned to Michael Lee at cob@a2jaycees.org.
Director Candidate
Elaine Smith Hembree

Hi! My name is Elaine and I have been a member of the Jaycees for just under a year. In that year, I have organized our Brunch & Museum outing (the Brunch was my idea - you're welcome!) and served on the Zombie Zap committee. I am originally from Texas, and have lived in cold, snowy Michigan for about 2 years. In Texas, I chaired and organized many events in the community and for non-profits. The Jaycees are exactly what I was looking for to fill that void in my life. Zombie Zap is honestly the best project ever! As a director, I would bring my ideas and my passion for helping to the table. I look forward to what the future brings and to find out how I can continue the mission of the Ann Arbor Jaycees.
Director Candidate
Carolyn Walsh

I am grateful to have been nominated to serve as a Director on the 2019 Ann Arbor Jaycees Board of Directors. I have not been a member of the group long but it has already had a positive impact on my life. It was a pleasure being entrusted to chair the annual 4th of July Parade where I was able to use some of the event organizing skills I learned from past positions. I have also enjoyed being involved in planning the Year Ender where we all get to celebrate new friendships and a great year as a chapter. Throughout this next year, I hope to strengthen my leadership skills and give back to this organization that has already given me so much.
