The MBB-FBI trial in Lower Manhattan resumes today with Brian Bowen Sr. back on the stand. This will make you wonder as ESPN headliner Vitale tweeted yesterday, "A source involved in the @FBI hoops investigation told me  there could be some testimony tomorrow that can create a big nightmare for some coaches & schools / stay tuned!" (link, link)
Maryland: Booster Jacklitsch, who was barred from traveling with the team to Michigan over the weekend, explains to the Washington Post his comments were not meant to cause any further pain to UMD FB student-athletes, saying: "I understand how much these kids have been through. They lose one of their best friends and a great kid -- Jordan. It’s amazing what the coaches have been through. We need to all support each other." Jacklitsch also said the media "keeps picking at a scab" while the feelings are still raw and intimated that he would like to travel with the team in the future. "I'm still undefeated when I'm on the sidelines." As for HC Durkin, Jacklitsch maintains his support, insisting that Durkin was not to blame for McNair's passing, positing instead that "little tiny pieces come together like a mosaic to help cause a tragedy. It's never one single thing." (link); Baltimore Sun reporters Richman and Donovan examine why so few FB student-athletes (six) agreed to speak to the consultants hired to investigate McNair's passing, citing some around the program, including parents, who wonder whether they would have been more forthcoming had the process been more confidential. One parent, who spoke anonymously for fear of retaliation against their son, explained that the list of those who spoke to the consultant could have been seen by any of the coaches. "The boys that came out have nothing to gain and everything to lose." The consultant, Dr. Walters, explained that "hindsight is 20/20 and arranging a more confidential process is "something we could've done." (link); USA Today's Brennan, speaking on a panel at UMD's Merrill College of Journalism, said last week that she believes Prez Loh, AD Evans and FB HC Durkin will all be dismissed as a result of the handling of McNair's passing as well as the overall FB culture at UMD. Brennan based her position on her coverage of similar situations in the past, adding: "I just think this is so bad. I think Maryland is better than this." Neither Loh's nor Evans' offices responded to the remarks. (link)
The Athletic's Quinn chronicles the ascension of Michigan State AD Beekman, whose rise, Quinn writes, has been "rapid and unforeseen." Beekman himself says he never gave serious consideration to taking the position when he delivered a list of interim AD candidates to interim Prez Engler, who responded: "I've got your list, but why don't you do it?" Quinn briefly questions whether a depiction by many of Beekman as a mediator can be reconciled with the chaos that followed the Nassar case, asking: "Did Beekman do as well as possible in an impossible situation or was he part of the problem?" Trustee Mosallam says yes, crediting Beekman with effectively managing "the egos of eight different constituents and eight different personalities." Regardless, Beekman's performance as interim AD, according to Engler, was "so strong that it became kind of unnecessary" to pursue external candidates. However, Quinn, citing multiple sources close to the transition, submits that Beekman's ascension may have been more a result of endorsements by MBB HC Izzo and FB HC Dantonio, and in his recollection of appointing Beekman to the full-time post, Engler acknowledges he "didn't even have time to think about a search." This, along with other things such as a clause in Beekman's contract that would reassign him to a senior position for a five-year term at $375K annually, has led some to speculate that the new AD may be a short-term hire. Engler calls such a suggestion silly. "I expect him to be the guy in 20 years that hires Tom Izzo's replacement." (link)
The Daily Pennsylvanian examines the four-year tenure of Penn AD Calhoun, whom the paper credits with elevating the overall athletic program. To illustrate, the DP looks at the last decade and points out that the Quakers' average league finish is 4.57. Under Calhoun's predecessor, who helmed the department for the first five-plus years of the decade, the average finish was 4.83. Under Calhoun, Penn's average finish has risen to 4.13, the biggest improvement of any Ivy League school. In addition, prior to Calhoun's arrival, the last time Penn won five Ivy championships in a single season was 2010-11. Since Calhoun took over, the Quakers have won five titles in a single season twice -- in each of the last two years, in fact. "When all is said and done, no one can argue that Penn has caught Harvard or Princeton, and no one can argue that getting to that point will be easy. But the numbers clearly show that the Quakers have at least taken a few steps on the road there." (link)
UMass professors Katz & Walker, along with PhD student Hindman, with a compelling look at the network effects of DI ADs & SWAs. You'll want to check out the visualizations of how these two sets of leaders are connected. Keys: "The AD network, which predominantly includes males, was far more cohesive (interconnected) than the network of SWAs. In cohesive networks, information is more likely to spread and members have greater access to best practices, job openings, and other important information. The inverse is also true; fragmented networks provide individuals with fewer opportunities to access information from other members of the network. […] If the SWA is supposed to represent the women’s version of the 'old boys’ club,' our research suggests it may not be very effective in combating the lack of women in leadership positions on its own. This is not to say SWAs cannot reach the position of AD; rather that when such a promotion transpires it is less likely to result from the SWA network." More. (link)
Could this become a thing with Compliance staffers? New Hampshire has partnered with data and digital content firm Sportradar to launch the first ever Sports Wagering and Integrity certificate program. Set to launch in early 2019, the fully online, five-course program offered through the UNH School of Law, is designed for working professionals and includes study in various areas, such as U.S. sports betting laws and regulations, safeguarding sport integrity and global regulation of sports betting. The program can be completed in as few as 10 months and requires a bachelor's degree for admission. Neither a background in the law nor application to the law school is required. (link, link)
Sporting News columnist DeCourcy has published his review of the HBO documentary Student Athlete, a film executively produced by Lebron James that attempts to pull the mask off college athletics. In short, DeCourcy was not a fan, taking exception with several misleading or factually inaccurate suppositions, such as the timing of the NCAA's investigation into academic misconduct at North Carolina and the portrayal of former MBB recruit Shaw as an elite recruit on par with former Kentucky and current New Orleans Pelicans star Davis, with whom Shaw shared a recruiting class. Regarding the latter, the film depicts Shaw as the ninth-ranked player on a list that included Davis as number one. What isn't immediately clear, according to DeCourcy, is that Shaw was the ninth-ranked player in Illinois, not the country. "Had that been the only trickeration the filmmakers executed in 90 minutes, it might have been passable. Indeed, scrolling all the way down to No. 91, which is where ESPN rated Shaw nationally, would have been an unattractive shot." DeCourcy also takes umbrage with a number of the film's other choices, including the aforementioned investigation at UNC and a lack of time devoted to refutation. "If you have a story worth telling, why not let the truth tell it?" Full review. (link)

The Athletic profiles Kentucky MBB HC Calipari as he prepares for his 10th season in Lexington and ponders his future at the helm of the winningest program in college basketball history. The 59-year-old jokes that the job has aged him: "Everywhere I go, I joke [to UK fans]: 'I want you to go look at that picture of me at the press conference when I first took the job and then look at me now, and you’ll feel bad for what you’ve done to me.' That isn’t that long ago, but this is one of those all-encompassing jobs." However, he has no plans of stepping away anytime soon: "I didn’t think I would be coaching in my 60s, mainly because of the pace I was going. But then again, it took me 20 years to get a job like this. So at this point, I don’t know. This platform will go away at some point. No one will worry about what I’m saying or what I think. [So] I’m not as anxious to leave and will probably stay much longer than I ever thought I would stay in coaching." (link)

College Football Playoff boss Hancock discusses a number of topics, including the success of the CFP and his previous work as the director of the NCAA MBB tourney. Hancock: "... the heartbeat of the CFP is the selection committee. The best thing the commissioners did when they set up the playoff was to create the committee to choose the teams. Our group of football experts is what makes the CFP purr. No group like this had ever been assembled in college football before, of course. The key is that these are high integrity people who know and love the game. And the diversity of background and thought contributes greatly to the committee's success. It has been rewarding to observe the diligence of the committee for these four years. They're dedicated. They're earnest. They are aware how important the event is, and they treat their job very seriously." (link)

According to an anonymous online survey conducted by the Tennessean, many Vanderbilt fans say they are embarrassed by the state of the FB stadium -- so much so that some say they have stopped attending games until they see progress made. One respondent offered the view that "it is an embarrassment, but the lack of Vanderbilt administration’s concern for its fan base is even more embarrassing and troubling." Another respondent noted that decreasing attendance is not Vanderbilt-specific, writing: "Renovate it if you want, but don’t pretend that it will fix our attendance issues." The majority of respondents indicated that Vandy, which has averaged just over 26K per home game this season, should not leave campus for home games, with 60% saying they prefer a renovation to the current stadium and 28% advocating for a new on-campus stadium. Among the most mentioned complaints at the existing stadium were small, uncomfortable seats, long restroom lines and an "old, outdated look." Meanwhile, 90% of respondents said they believed the university has available funds to renovate the stadium or build a new one. (link)
Illinois highlights the initiatives Illini AD Whitman has put in place to change the culture and improve inclusion and diversity within his department. Shortly after taking over the job, Whitman established the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which was co-chaired by Senior Assoc. ADs Woods and Price and led to the creation of several initiatives, including “Real Talks,” which gave student-athletes the opportunity to discuss social issues; the two-day Diversity & Inclusion Summit in February; and the "If You Can Play, You Can Play" video. Price: "An inclusive and diverse culture in DIA [Division of Intercollegiate Athletics] means providing a space where people can really feel comfortable being themselves. And they feel like this space is open and free where they don't have to pretend to be someone they're not. Where everyone feels accepted and where there's equality." (link)
Beer at Ballgames: Memphis AD Bowen notes how his Tigers don't make any money off concessions at either the Liberty Bowl or FedEx Forum, "To have a program at this level be sustainably successful when you don't own the stadium you play in and you don't own the arena you play in — you literally take revenue that every other institution you compete against has access to and you cut your revenues into one single revenue stream, and that's ticketing. [...] What’s interesting — as your program grows — people don’t realize how concessions are so incredibly lucrative. And, the Liberty Bowl sells alcohol — that’s very lucrative. ... It's another revenue stream that's pretty stable." (link); Sales from the NCAA's offering of suds at MBB Tournament sites will be split between the association, venue & the host institution.
