May Newsletter: Spring into Summer

Spring into Summer
With a few touches here and there; Summer is in the Air.

The sun is shining (every once and awhile) and spring cleaning is done.  You have started to plan for friends and family and summer get togethers.  When you look around you notice that your decor doesn't seem as lively as your summer fever is.  To redesign your decor seems overwhelming, but to enhance the decor you have takes a little time and a few tips so you know where to focus your efforts.  As always if you are still feeling overwhelmed then lets design together!  I love bringing the stores to your house where we can play in your home.

Summer Fever Decorating:

How To Enhance Your Decor:
First: Decided on your budget.  A budget will help you know where to focus your efforts, how much you can spend on your items, and not feel overwhelmed by shopping first and budgeting later.  You should pick your stores according to your budget as well.  You never want to fall in love with something that is outside your budget.

Second: Cut out examples from magazines that you like or dislike.  If stores overwhelm you, or if you don't know your "style", then this will help you focus.  If you have a pile of pictures you like, as well as pictures you don't like, you can start to notice a pattern of what designs you are drawn to (or are not drawn to).  For instance if you have pictures of lots of different pillows, ask yourself what these pillows have in common.  Are they all silk? Have tassels? Look modern? Have a pattern?  Then you know that this commonality is something you should be buying for your own decor.

Third: Decide on a color scheme.  Sometimes it is hard to pick a color scheme until you start shopping.  If you do not know an exact color scheme that is okay, however you should have narrowed it down to at least the "red/orange" family verses "blue/green" family.

What To Focus Your Budget On:
First: Linens.  Linens/Fabrics in each room are easy to exchange out and helps a room to feel complete. This would include pillows, tablecloths, napkins, drapes, etc. Once again remember your budget first.  If your budget doesn't allow for a complete change of drapes; then see if you can exchange out the outer panels or the scarf you may have.  If you budget doesn't allow for any change of drapes; then pick out pillows that will still match.  If you have solid colored pillows; try pillows with pattern to give a different feel.  If you are working on the kitchen, then focus on the tablecloth or placemats.

Second: Centerpieces.  I love how summer brings flowers, fresh smells, and sunshine!  With this in mind change your centerpieces to a bouquet of flowers that match your decor, a bowl of fresh fruit that just wants to be eaten, or bright colored candles that bring the outside in.  The centerpieces should still match the feeling you are wanting with your decor.  The centerpieces can be put on the patio table, coffee table, dining table, bookshelf, etc.

Third: Pictures and Trinkets.  If your budget allows, this is a great way to freshen up your space.  I love the floating shelves in different areas of my home which hold pictures and trinkets from places I have been.  One thing you can do for summer is print off some fun new pictures of you, your family, your pets, etc, with summer in mind.  Your outfits can match your decor, the background could be in a field of flowers, this is for you to decided!  Then add a few trinkets to those shelves (TV stand, kitchen table, nightstand, side table, etc) that match your color scheme as well.  Some examples:  a clay frog, stained glass insects, bright colored flower vases, candles, glass balls; The Sky is the Limit!

Decorating Key To Remember:
Everyones taste is individual and the key is to show your style.  Don't be scared to try something; if it doesn't work then you are closer to what does.  After a couple years of "Springing into Summer" try to mix and match what you have purchased to make a new look.  If you didn't like something, then don't keep it as it will just take up space.  Make sure you stick to your budget, and Have Fun!  Still Stuck?  Then I look forward to hearing from you!

May Classes
Beyond Collectables – Is Your Home Too Cluttered?
The common term ‘hoarding’ refers to someone who acquires and does not throw out a large number of items that have little or no value to others such as papers or clothes. Kristin Bertilson of Queen B Organizing will share stories from past clients who have hired her to help with hoarding or clutter issues in their homes, and present ideas of how to organize and clean house! This program is for anyone who needs guidance on dealing with clutter, or helping a loved one.  Kristin will answer specific questions, so come prepared with any questions you might have (you will have an opportunity to write down questions so they remain anonymous).
