September Climate Summary
After a hot summer, a highly amplified weather pattern developed in September bringing abnormally cold conditions to the Prairies and abnormally warm conditions to eastern North America. Widespread parts of the Prairies recorded a top 10 coldest September. It was also one of the snowiest on record in parts of central Alberta and southern Manitoba. In Winnipeg, 0.6 cm of snow was recorded in September, the first measurable snowfall in September since 1984. On September 22nd, 0.4 cm of the snow fell, which was also the third earliest measurable snowfall on record in Winnipeg since 1872. At Edmonton International Airport, over 38 cm of snow was recorded, triple the previous September record (records since 1959). The wet, snowy, and cold conditions has made harvesting stressful and difficult across the Prairies.

Unfortunately, the cold, wet and snowy conditions look to continue across the Prairies until at least the middle of October. This will likely become one of the coldest and snowiest first halves of fall ever recorded across the Prairies since records began in the late 19th century.
