Fall offers much more bearable temperatures, plus a drop in humidity that makes it easier for newly planted trees to grow and develop substantial root systems. If you’re interested in planting trees in order to enjoy their beauty this fall, here are some tips to keep in mind:
Choose carefully
There are a number of beautiful trees that will put out gorgeous foliage during the autumn months. A few of our favorites include:

These trees will add both beauty and depth to your property.
Know your soil makeup
Unfortunately, not every tree will thrive in your yard. To figure out which trees will be most successful, start by testing your soil. Once you know the makeup of your soil, you’re better to able to determine the types of trees and shrubbery that will do best on your property.
Check out the breakdown of your lawn
Before you begin planting, stop and take note of the breakdown of your lawn. Do you have areas that get direct sunlight or perhaps very little sun? What about spots that seem to collect large amounts of water when it rains? You’ll want to keep these points in mind as you determine where, specifically, you’ll place trees and shrubs. Factors like too little sun or too much water make it difficult for a newly planted tree to grow and develop properly.
Take note of the other trees in your area
If you’re not sure if it’s still safe to plant, use the other trees in your neighborhood as a guide. Generally speaking, if you’re still noticing leaves hanging around, it’s safe to plant a new tree or shrub in your yard. Once the leaves are gone for the season, hold off on planting until the spring.
Be sure to water properly
Just like during the spring, when you add a new tree to your property, you’ll want to water it weekly until the ground freezes. Some people feel that because it’s cooler in the fall, new trees need less water, when in reality this isn’t the case. Even if the tree has already lost its leaves, sufficient water allows the tree to continue to develop strong roots.
Don't go overboard when digging
This is a common planting mistake, and is often a major factor when trees and shrubbery fail to survive. When planting, the hole you’re digging should be no deeper than the depth of the plant’s root ball.
