Ballot Question.... Four?

That's right! If you live in the 1st Hampshire District (and in other select districts), you will have a fourth question on your ballot on November 6th. It is a non-binding ballot question to gauge support for a Single Payer Health Care system.

WHAT IS SINGLE PAYER?
Single Payer is a system of financing private health care through a publicly funded Health Care Trust. People may continue to see their current providers or choose new ones. There would be no more “in-network” or “out-of-network” barriers to those choices.
With a Single Payer System, we would pay no premiums, deductibles, co-pays, or other out-of-pocket fees. Instead, a fair and affordable tax on payroll and unearned income would secure lifetime benefits for everyone and result in savings for almost every Massachusetts resident.

WHY THIS QUESTION MATTERS
Health care costs in Massachusetts are extremely high and rising, straining town, state, school, employer and household budgets. This draws money away from other critical needs such as public education and infrastructure. In addition, many people can’t afford health care, even if they are insured, due to high deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses.

Special thanks to Western Mass Medicare for All for the above information!

Around the District... some highlights

Justice Cup

The Justice Cup 2018 was a wonderful way to spend Indigenous People's Day - and to play some soccer on a very wet field! Thank you to the Pioneer Valley Workers Center for hosting and many congratulations to the winning team!

Pulaski Day Parade

Both parade veterans and first-time attendees came out to celebrate Polish heritage in our community at Monday's 32nd Annual Pulaski Day parade!

Girls on the Run!

Girls on the Run works to instill a love of running paired with a confidence-building curriculum focused on healthy life skills, and I was thrilled to support them at their annual FUNdraiser. Want to help? Sign up to run the GOTR 5K November 18 at Smith College, donate, or sign on to be a coach by visiting girlsontherunwesternma.org.

WHMP Pong-A-Thon

Despite my less than stellar ping pong skills, it was so much fun volleying with Bob Flaherty of WHMP - and most importantly supporting the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program.

Westhampton Fall Festival

For weeks now, people in Westhampton have been telling me about the festival's skillet throw. I finally got to participate this weekend! 30'8" inches wasn't bad for a first try.

Women & the 2018 Election

Running as a woman poses a unique set of challenges so I was grateful to the Smith College Democrats for hosting this forum and to my fellow panelists for the thoughtful conversation.
