On this Wednesday’s Council Agenda, I am introducing Resolution 2018-35 entitled:
“RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE COUNTY OF KAUAʻI’S COMMITMENT TO THE PARIS AGREEMENT RELATING TO CLIMATE CHANGE”
Its intent and effect are straightforward. By approving the resolution, the Council, on behalf of the people of Kauaʻi, will be joining Mayor Carvalho and the other mayors in the State of Hawaiʻi; Governor Ige; the Hawaiʻi State Legislature; thousands of cities and states throughout America, and almost all countries throughout the world in affirming our commitment to the Paris Agreement. Any action begins with a commitment, and the resolution represents the first step in our journey to stem Climate Change. Itʻs up to all of us on Kaua’i to ensure that this resolution leads to a concrete reduction in the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) produced on Kauaʻi and moves Kauaʻi toward our General Plan goal of becoming more sustainable.
This is our most pressing problem today at the global scale because it threatens the survival of humankind as we know it.
If you are concerned about this issue, please take a few moments to send an email to the Council in support of the resolution (or opposing, if that is your stand). Email to CouncilTestimony@kauai.gov. If you have the time, please come to Council Chambers on Wednesday, October 10, at 8:30 a.m. and testify. When you sign in, indicate that you want to speak at the beginning of the meeting because you are unable to wait until the agenda item comes up. Mahalo for standing up for Planet Earth!
