Will your school be the next APMSA AAC winner?

Last week, the APMSA Presidents' Committee announced that the 2019 Annual Academic and Athletic Conference (AAC) will take place at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee from Friday, February 8 to Sunday, February 10, 2019. This will be an entirely new format in a new location and coincide with the APMSA Mid-Winter House of Delegates meeting.

Ms. Patel, Chair of the APMSA Presidents' Committee, says "the weekend will be jam-packed with academics, basketball, and camaraderie." On Friday, students will spend the day learning from leaders in podiatry about topics ranging from Diabetes to Sports Medicine. Saturday will feature a double elimination basketball tournament, where teams will compete against other schools for glory and bragging rights in both the men’s and women’s categories. Later that evening, students will have a chance to hit the town with both AAC participants and members of the APMSA House of Delegates.

The AAC is the ideal opportunity for you to network with other students from all nine podiatry schools as well as leaders in our profession. With this outstanding line-up, APMSA hopes every school will be represented!! Look out for registration information in November and updates from your school President. And, start assembling your teams!

Beta Testers Needed

The APMSA is preparing to launch the APMSA Community by early November. The site will be a secure, dynamic online community for students, potential podiatry students, and alumni to interact, engage, and discuss issues. Community members will have a place to collaborate, ask questions, provide answers or resources, and discuss the hot topics of the day.

We need beta group volunteers to field-test the Community in the coming weeks to help make the site more comprehensive and user-friendly. What will this entail? Beta Testing is the testing phase prior to the launch of an online community site. It requires a sample group of users to complete exercises designed to test the functionality and features of the site. To join the APMSA Beta Testing Group, please e-mail Heather Keith at hakeith@apmsa.org.
Take Care of Yourself

With World Mental Health Day and National Hand Washing Day falling on October 10th and 15th, respectively, we are reminded this month to take care of ourselves as well as our patients. Here are 6 ways to refresh your mental health:
  1. Schedule a therapy session like it's a workout - sessions are no longer bound to an office visit and can be done remotely using technology.
  2. Do an actual workout - regular exercise is proven to improve mental health.
  3. Back away from your phone - constant use of your phone doesn't allow your mind to rest, so taking a break can be beneficial.
  4. Go to sleep 10 minutes earlier - reduced sleep can lead to social problems and increased loneliness.
  5. Use your vacation days - traveling has been shown to decrease stress, improve sleep quality, lower the risk of heart disease and boost general happiness.
  6. Stock your kitchen with brain foods - healthy eating can lower the risk of depression and suicide, and also improves mood by boosting the immune system.
