In June, three teaching stream faculty, Judith Poë of the Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences, Barbara Murck of the Department of Geography and Irene Wiecek of the Department of Management, were promoted from associate professors, teaching stream to professors, teaching stream. They are the first teaching stream faculty members at UTM to undergo review for promotion under a new university policy.

Susan Senese has been appointed executive director, strategy. Previously, Senese was Interim CAO, director of Information & Instructional Services and Associate Librarian Research and Information Technology. In her new role, Senese will work with senior administration to implement strategic initiatives.

Jessica Nayda has been appointed assistant director, residence life at UTM. Previously, Nayda held several roles in student housing services at the University of Guelph.

Michael "Mike" Lavelle, a long-serving member of the Erindale College community, has died. Lavelle was a lecturer with the Department of Religion from 1971 until his retirement in 2002. He also served as director of residence from 1979 to 2002, and oversaw the development of many campus residence residence buildings. Lavelle is remembered as a mentor, friend, coach and teacher.

The recipients of the UTM Annual Research Prize have been announced. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of early career researchers and scholars in the humanities, sciences and social sciences. The 2018 recipients are Assistant Professor Erin Tolley of the Department of Political Science, Assistant Professor Barton Scott of the Department of Historical Studies and Associate Professor Marc Laflamme of the Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences. The trio will be recognized at a campus symposium on Thursday, Nov. 29.
